Replaced FP, check valve, still hard to start
 

I just installed a new fuel pump, gas filter, new check valve, checked the fuel tank strainer (clean as a whistle)....and the 968 still is hard to start after sitting several days...it's actually intermittent. Sometimes cranks right off, other times cranks and cranks. Appears to be losing fuel in line due to leak ???? but I can' t see any signs of leaks or puffs of smoke on startup. What's most likely culprit? Fuel pressure Dampner, fuel pressure regulator, fuel accumulator, or leaky injectors? Any way to troubleshoot it down so I don't have to replace it all? Thanks.

Try changing the regulator. Its possible its allowing the fuel system to depressurize.

A faulty dampener will cause your fuel pressure to jump up and down as the injectors fire.

Leaky injectors could be it also..possibly causing vapor lock.

Have you checked your fuel pressure at the rail yet?

The only way I can think of is to pressurize the fuel system and then pull the fuel rail to see if the injectors are leaking. If it's the fuel pressure regulator or dampner, the fuel would have to go somewhere meaning the diaphrams are broken inside and the fuel is leaking off into the vacuum lines. Mine was doing that at one time. You can tell by pulling the vacuum lines when it's under pressure....if there is fuel in there replace that particular part. Check that first and if that's not it, then check the injectors.

These are good ideas. I don't have a pressure gauge but may have to order one. Since the car came with no record of repairs, I'm replacing key stuff just in case so I don't get stranded on some remote stretch of road. There's a lot of dirt between light poles here in Idaho and surrounding states and reliability is important.

I'll check this stuff out.

Not a bad policy Harvey....keep the cell phone handy as well. Pull the vacuum lines...at least that's easy enough to check the fpr and dampner.
