upper & lower balance shaft belt

First I just want to thank everyone for helping with the timing belt question! I'm so glad we found this site. I think my man is going to take a look at the valves - hope they aren't bent.

To review, it's for a 1984 944.

On the same lines as the timing belt question.... Since my man is in there changing it, he was going to do the balance shaft belt as well - His question
"Do the upper and lower balance shafts have to be in a specific alignment when putting the belt on after finding TDC on the crank and cam?"

Oh, and they tried to make it run with out the belt - didn't work so well. lol

Thank you so much!
~ Niki

Yes, the balance shafts must be in a certain alignment before the belt gets put on.

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/eng-08.htm

Double check the alignment of everything, its very easy to get them 180 degrees out of phase. It wont be apparent at idle but when you hit 3000-ish rpms the car will shake like a washing machine on spin cycle.

Porsche decided to remove one of the alignment marks on the sprockets to complicate things, why?? noone will ever know. It was cheaper to make the sprocket with one less "O" stamped on it!

Don't know why you are putting a timing belt on it when the valves are bent. Need to pull the head and replace the bent valves first.

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

thank you thank you

Thank you so much for all the answers!! You guys are so cool! I will show this to my man when we get off work. I'm sure he'll check the valves first, just wanted to get all our ducks in a row. Aquiring the info first before he found himself in the middle of it not knowing about the balance belt.

No need to "check the valves first". Pull the head and replace the bent ones. With a stripped timing belt you have bent valves. These are interference engines. If your "man" can't understand that then he has no business working on the car.

Heed Hugh.

If your 'man' has to ask about timing the balance shafts, he's not your man.

As always, I agree with Hugh. It's very easy to go from a 944 that could be repaired to a garden ornament that looks nice but doesn't actually do anything. There are plenty of threads on what "needs" to be replaced and what "must" be replaced when doing timing belt repairs.

Missing out doing either replacing certain parts or not following the repair proceedures usually means the 944 might run, but only last a very short time or won't ever run again and it will be someone else's parts car.

It can be repaired, it just takes time and understanding.

Remove head and take it to a shop to have the valves replaced and reseated. Head shaved or checked etc. Replace both belts and check and replace all belt bearings. eary to check. Spin in your hand. If you can hear or feel the bearing, it needs replacing. While there replace all the fron seals.

Telling you that you and your "man" are wrong is insulting? Think not. What is insulting is a refusal to listen to experianced advice.

Sounds like some tension in this post. Take a deap breath SoCal!, some people just shouldn't have or "try" to fix Porsches.
