which oil which oil?
My first oil change is coming up, and I'm really wondering what weight/brand of oil to go with.
I've read synthetics at 5W-40 are the Porsche reccomended way... but what do you guys think?

20-50 your choice. IMO it doesn't make much difference what brand as long as you keep it full and clean. (Of course assuming it is api certified)
I use the five qt. jugs from walmart. Change the oil every 3-4k, filter every other change. FYI, the factory maint. manual that came w/ the car specifies oil change at 15k intervals. If I was flogging the car at the track, perhaps I would feel different. Bottom line, 20-50, clean and full, engine likely to outlast the rest of the car. MW PS You should probably lighten up a bit in the dead of winter. Last edited by mbwilser; 08-15-2006 at 04:42 AM.. |

I run 15w-40 Rotella-T in everything i've owned. ESPECIALLY flat-tappet motors.
I've never really believed in synthetics too much. The oil will tend to get dirty/contaminated before it breaks down.

I use 10w-40 for the winter (late october through late march) and 20w-50 for the warmer months. This is in NYC winters where we get a low of usually 0-degrees at the most. Never had problems cranking and starting upwith the 10w40.
The 20w-50 is perfect for when im sitting in staging at autocrosses and its 100 degrees out.. oil pressure does not drop below 3bar. If i was running the 10w-40 it would probably be hovering right around 2bar at idle. I recently started to use Castrol High Miles and its actually done as advertised and stopped one of my oil leaks. The pan would usually be wet with oil as i am pretty sure the gasket is leaking on the drivers side. No longer goes oil seap out!

I run Castroil 20w-50 for summer ...and the same for summer-lite. We don't have winters in Texas but if we did, I would follow Techno Duck and switch to 10w-40. I generally pick a brand and stay with it and I've been running Castroil in all my cars including my race cars for a very long time but there are many many good brands. I agree with what was said earlier...if it's clean and full, those are the two most important things. I change mine very regularly and NEVER exceed 3000 miles on oil and I change the filter every time. They are much cheaper than engines, so that's pretty cheap insurance. Engines love new clean oil.
