Maybe it's because it's so late in the night.......But frustration is getting the best of me........
So I've been having electrical problems for a while.......It all came (apart) together when I installed a rebuilt starter three weeks ago.......and last week, it literally burns out because of an electrical failure my friend helped point out....It was some kind of half assed alarm setup...here's most of the crap I pulled out that the PO had (horribly) Installed.... ![]() So I try to trace and clean up all the wires and pretty much bring everything to stock......after that, I install a freshly rebuilt starter, but before that, I come along these last set of connections......... ![]() I notice that it's a Bosch relay, so I leave it alone....they must have bypassed something, I dunno........ So I try to start the car and it starts up perfectly.....I run it for 20 minutes and everything is within proper levels..... I then turn the car off so I could test drive it later tonight...........Well, it doesn't start........All I hear is the clicking of the starter.......and for some reason my headlights no longer come up...... Battery is fine and all and I'm sure I've repaired the wiring correctly.......i've tried disconnecting the relay and same thing........maybe I'm just having bad luck with starters???? Either way im gonna remove the starter and get it checked tomorrow..........anything else to go over????? Thanks guys......

if your headlights wont go up either... i'd check your ignition switch..
although if that were the case, i think you'd see more symptoms.. when you turn the key, is everything else normal? all sounds and lights come on that are supposed to?

Check the starter with a volt meter. You should have roughly 13 to 14 volts on the main post. With the key in the start position, you should have 12 volts on the smaller terminal...if you have those two things, the starter should turn over.

Never known a starter to fail because of "electrical problems".

heh, good luck... my threads (search for electrical and my name) might help, but they might not. I started with an alarm wiring cleanup, which quickly turned into an engine rebuild, which turned into a v8 swap. We'll see if she ever runs again

Why is it that non-factory (and factory...for that matter) alarms seem to cause so many problems in these cars?
Other makes seem to shrug them off...

Part of the problem, I think, is that the alarm wiring isn't documented anywhere. In all of my wiring diagrams, there's this free-floating mention of the factory alarm... no explanation anywhere other than that. You would really think that since the jumper bypass trick is all over the net someone would post a 'how to remove the alarm completely' guide.
edit: There are a lot of scca/autox only cars that have removed the alarms. You would really think that either here or on the list they'd have said how they did it. I eventually figured out how to bypass the factory alarm and got the car to start, but then I started a bottom-end rebuild... one thing led to another, and... ![]()

I have one on mine and it isn't causing any problems yet, but I sure would like to get rid of it as well. Hey Bryan, was it easy to bypass?

Unfortunately, the car has been completely stripped since then, so I can't go out and look at what I did.
Here are the steps to 'bypass' the alarm. http://clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-23.htm When I removed mine, I *think* what I did was first do the bypass with the jumpers, then started the car to make sure it worked. Then I cut the first pair of wires going to two terminals that were jumped, and I soldered them together. Then start the car, then cut/solder the last pair, start the car. After that, I traced all of the remaining wires to where they connected on the relay/fuse board and removed them. Then I traced my soldered wires as close as I could to the relay board and soldered them together there. If you do this, make sure you test along the way, because you'll have a damn hard time getting help if you cut/solder the wrong wires.

An ungrounded DME will have some of the circuit board traces fry.

OK,
So I've removed the relay with it's wiring and guess what....the car starts.....I was actuallay able to start the car twice today with no problems.............. and now the fother mucker won't start again.......all I hear is the starter either clicking because it's moving forward or because it's hitting the flywheel.......i better not have a faulty clutch cylinder!!!!!!! or could this be because I might have burned the dme and accmpanying wires ?!?!? or do I have a faulty starter?!?!? my hopes have been played with the past two days.....this is weak.........

what would having a faulty clutch cylinder have to do with the car not starting?

I was thinking if my clutch wouldn't engage, then the flywheel wouldn't move, therefore the starter wouldn't be able to move the flywheel....thus no start......maybe???

your car will jump forward if it's in gear and you try to start it...
dont attempt it.. i had never driven stick before, and i went out to start my car (then owned by a buddy of mine)... almost put it through his garage...
