AC Delete Bracket
 

There is no way in hell I'm putting my alternator back in the stock location. I'm going to delete the AC and move it lower.

My question is, there seem to be (at least) two different AC delete brackets out there: the one from Porsche and the one from Lindsey racing. Being that there is only a $10 price difference between the two, I'm curious about their relative performance. Is one better than the other? Why?

I'd be willing to bet the Lindsey unit is a heck of a lot lighter (aircraft-grade aluminum, if I remember correctly). The Porsche bracket is simply a factory no-cost AC delete item.

I haven't weighed them side by side but the factory part is thin cast aluminum and isn't very heavy at all, I doubt there is a significant weight difference between the two brackets. The machined and annodized aftermarket bracket does look cooler though. I waited for an aftermarket broadfoot bracket for 2 months before I got fed up and ordered the factory bracket.

Is there a good reason I shouldn't get the Lindsey one?

Well, if it makes you feel better, I adore Lindsey racing... the fact that a good portion of the PCA club racers that I've seen at LimeRock heavily use their products makes me feel okay about ordering from them ;)

Well, my new J Boot (and vacuum lines) came in yesterday, my A/C delete bracket is coming in tomorrow, and the shop just called and my alternator is rebuilt and ready to pick up.

Maybe I can have her running by the weekend!

I double-checked the projected arrival date for my bracket and it is tomorrow, not today. :(

I did manage to get the old bracket off last nigh and pull everything of the AC system but the coolant lines...

I found an immaculate radiator behind the condensor.

Actually the no AC alternator mounting bracket came first in the early '83 models. Later AC was added to 60% of all '83's as an option. Then in '84 AC became a standard add-on. Still the same "Bullet Proof" bracket as issued by Porsche today, and it's shorter 5 rib Serpentine belt. In '85.5 the belt became a 6 rib Serpentine belt - in 5 rib or 6 rib belts the no AC belt is smaller on the diameter than the Plus AC belt. Other parts remain the same on both configurations, adjustment turn-buckle, and so on.

Almost forgot - The AC Delete Alternator sits much lower that if it has AC. So the cooling air ducting is different starting on the Alternator Cooling Ducting back cap. With AC the cap there aims down to pass the ducting around the AC Compressor - Where as the rear cap that is mounted to the back of the alternator on non AC cars, the ducting cap aims down then 90* at the bottom of the Alternator it turns 90* to face the front of the Engine - therefore the old style ducting plan is to have the duct pass very close to the bottom of the Alternator - and does snot dip way down any more to clear the compressor.

I went the DIY route. The local junk yard gave me the adjustable alternator arm that I used. A bit of smacking with a hammer, one hole drilled, and a new shorter belt and I was good to go. $15 total cost and nearly no added weight.
But yes, the alternator is in the stock location.

I broke down and got the 5 guys as well....i mean fast guys....
