Anyone rebuild thier own calipers?
 

I just bought the caliper rebuild kit from Pelican. And i'm having seconds thoughts they sen't me the wrong kit. The rubber seal for the piston is like half as tall as the original. Anyone else have the same issue?

The rubber seals on the pistons are an 'exact' fit.

The rubber 'dust boot' for the outside is all folded in on itself, and will expand when you put it on, and the piston pushes out.

Clean all the parts, and use some brake fluid or ATF to 'lube' the rubber seals when re-assembling. Also use brake lube on the sliding surfaces of the calipers.

Jaime, you may have received the kit for the dual piston calipers. Those will be smaller in size than the single piston ones.

You may want to polish the bores of the calipers and the pistons with some krokus (sp?) cloth while you're at it, but don't forget to flush them afterwards. A little white grease on the plastic caliper sliders on assembly and you'll be fine. It's a relaxing way to spend an afternoon.

I rebuildt the front calipers. The o-ring or bore seal (not sure if this is the right description) was slightly lower in height than the one fitted to my vehicle (kit bought from our host). Brake specialist adviced me not to use this and rather find one that is an exact match. I was fortunate to pick up an exact match at a local brake shop for about 3 USD per kit.
There was very littel gunge / corrosion in the caliper bores after 20+ years.

Well, finished the install, the dust boots fit correctly they just werent as large as the originals but still had a snug fit. I just went fot it and all the peices came together. I used some ATE Lube to lube all the moving parts in the caliper and the surfaces of the brake pads that were going to touch the calipers.I used brake fluild to lube inside the piston walls and the piston itself including the seal inside the piston wall. Didnt think to polish the cylinder and walls, will have to do that next time since it was such an easy task. Both pistons were in pretty good shape just a little watter scale i think not to bad couldent clean all of it off. But its a good thing i rebuilt them b/c one of the piston chambers had like a toothpaste cap full of sediment that was all rusted, I took it out with my finger and it was pretty nasty.

If you got the time i'de say rebuild you're own calipers it didnt take to much time just a litte force and patience.


Calipers working great now. No squeal b/c of the lube and im sure the Mintex red pads are helping too
