Porsche Crest Ive neglected her for too long

My life has been hectic. Im 18....i have graduated high school.... i was accepted to the University of Rhode Island (which is about two hours away from my home town)....but had serious doubts that i could leave my girlfriend for any lengthy periods of time, so ive decided to work and go to school locally. My dad has literally slipped into insanity over the last few years and my mom has always been a saint, so Ive had to deal with quite a bit of stress lately. I do have good news though my girl is amazing and I currently own a - 1985 944. Unfortunately i have neglected the white porsche in my driveway for too long. Ive been spending most of my free time with a car that is quite a bit different. I managed to get my hands on a 12v gti vr6. I have to admit that tearing up the backroads in a car that weighs 2700 lbs and is adorned with a gold crest is great fun, but dont rule out the thrills of a short axle fwd vr6 with about 200 lbft of torque. Believe it or not this thing launches to about 135 mph. I have to be honest when i say that the vw tuning scene is very exciting. Companies are popping up with endless performance parts for these watercooled machines worldwide. APR and EIP are just two of the excellent tuners available to the US market. Anyways...let me try to find a point....I am happy to say that I am actually making decent money working now so id like to start on the 944 again. Id really like to pull the engine and tranny out and rebuild entirely. Im trying to decide whether i should start with the stock 2.5 liter lump thats in the car and begin rebuild....or should i rebuild the 2.5 clean it up and try to get some money for it to save for a 16v or maybe even a 3.0. I think natural aspiration will suit me alright for now. Any advice because I want to start on this thing.

I hope you are very well suited for mechanic work. rebuilding a 944 engine isn't easy for someone who has never wrenched engines before. It has been done by several people on here, but its always a long process, but a very enlightening one.

I think your decision will have to be founded on what kind of shape the car is in. No reason to put money all over the engine just to run out before you can fix body/interior. If this is the case your best bet is to try to find a different one, where the work has been done for you. An S or S2. Also, why exactly do you need to rebuild the engine? If there is mechanical problems, that is one thing. But if what your getting at is trying to make more power, don't bother. Might as well sell it and go for the S or S2, again.

Thirdly, if you just want to make a nice project car, and have the money to throw at it, then by all means don't let my unfounded comments deteur you. Do what needs to be done with the engine, i.e. new seals, belts, general care, and then do a workup on the suspension. Coilovers, sway arms, bushings, etc. You can do a lot with that area.

Best of luck.

Here is my feel from your post...Sounds like you are really more interested in the tuner cars than Porsche. If you intend to build this engine to make the 944 a tuner, be a waste of time/money. So if you are, I would do just that, go tuner and sell the 944.

If your desire is to rebuild the 944 as a daily, that is a different matter. With no or lack of experience on a 944, meaning if you have not done a clutch job yet, a engine rebuild is not advised, based on experience/skills. You can most assuredly get a engine and drop it in for much less work. Keep the old motor and then take the time to rebuild it and learn as you go. If it does not run, no worries, just keep at it till it does. In the meanwhile you do have one that is running!

And on a final note...A total rebuild that involves the cylinders is NOT the same process as a 350 Chevy!!....(boring/honing)

What Dal said....

On a side note....I understand how you feel about your girlfriend and it's great that you talk about her the way you do...just get a good education as it's with you for life and will serve you for life....not always the case with girlfriends. But if you have to...take her with you to get the education. OK, enough of the dad in me...no more lectures!
