starter motor access
the quality of this question will give you an indication of my mechanical ability. Can anyone tell me where the starter motor is, is it down there under the exhaust manifold. This is related to an alternator problem and some of you advised cleaning the terminals on the starter motor. What is the best access to these, would the car need to go up on ramps. Thanks for any input.

no problem!
the car needs to be lifted in some way.. ramps or jack and stands... the starter motor, if you look at the side of the car, is located between the half way point on the car, and the front wheel, right in the center (of the width) of the car.. basically, you're looking under the car, under the center console area...

thanks, got the car up in the air now and can see a yellow shrouded cable that appears to split near the motor and the exposed bit of cable is looking corrode. Assuming that this is the route cause of my alternator warning light problem is it a difficult task to get to both ends of the cable to change it?

not sure.. never done it before, someone else will be along shortly...
make sure you have disconnected the battery's negative terminal before you poke around in there.

What year and model? Most "regular" 944's will require removing the filter box to accesss the back of the alternator. The heavy wire from the alternator does run to the large cable at the starter but does not have too. You can run it directly to the positive cable on the battery. I've done this several times as a quick fix rather than run it to the starter.

Not certain on your engine. Older 2 or newer 2.5 liter? In any case you can just cut off the alternator wire to the starter and run it direct to the positive on the battery.
