Started assembling my Mega Squirt II computer

I received my Mega Squirt II on Thursday and started soldering right away. I am at the point where I can test my power supply but I have to wait until the stimulator comes in the mail. I just ordered it. NOTE... If you order MS order the stimulator at the same time....
Here is a pic of my work area. Note the MS box in its nice black anodized form.

BTW this is for the LT1 V-8 project 948 which was in previous form, Legion's old "S". May she make him proud :)

right on speedy....
i've been hearing alot about megasquirt amongst you guys....have no idea how it works....and on a V8? I will definitely be visiting the boards for updates....who knows, I might get educated enough to use megasquirt with a possible 968 conversion.....have fun bro.....:D

Schumi 08-12-2006 12:33 PM

Enthuzed, I have also heard alot about it from some of the guys here. From what I understand it is a full electonic stand alone fuel injection management system. Thats all I could say...

Seemlingly a hard-core project speedracing944, not only are you doing the MS, but also a v8, all to the same car...

Are you using that soldering gun I see to the side to assemble the kit?!
You should not be using a soldering gun. Many of them use the tip as part of the circuit on the secondary transformer. This can apply dangerous voltages to the circuits you are soldering.
A small soldering iron is what I would reccomend, especially one with a fine tip for electronics work.

That said, megasquirt is cool :D

Nice Speedy...I'll soon have a car to chase you in...

I am going to purchase a smaller soldering gun. This big motha is hard to handle while doing this small work. I will be checking the power supply shortly to make sure everything turned out all right.

We'll have to meet up and swap rides. ;)

Very nice. You will not be dissappointed.

Take your time during the assembly.

Smaller soldering gun?...
Just buy a fine tipped iron. Even a cheap-o 20W or 25W would be just fine, and only ~$10. With the hand-held pencil irons the heater is seperate from the tip, and there is very little risk of damaging components (Except by heat).

Schumi 08-13-2006 08:49 PM

I used to do some work soldering IC's with computers and all.. and I remember being told the optimum wattage for soldering computer components was about 30W. Those larger 50-70W irons can cause damage to sensitive components. If the solder doesn't want to melt with a 30W iron, find some finer, lower melting point solder.

Here is the newest addition to the family. Is't it cute?

Once the Stimulator comes inthe mail I will assemble it and test the power supply to make sure I wasn't careless with the heat. I will update when this happens. Thanks for the feedback everybody :)

ae1969 did you use the Ford EDIS ignition system as well? I will be using the EDIS 8 which is from the 1996 Ford Mustang Cobra. How do you like the ignition?

EDIS is really easy to setup. You should have no problems.

My Mega Squirt Stimulator came in the mail yesturday (green circuit board on the right side). I soldered it together this morning which only took an hour. Boy is the new soldering iron much nicer to use. I then grabbed an old AC/DC 9V adapter I have had for 20 years (I knew there was going to be a reason to keep this thing around) BTW this just reinforced my packrat habit. Plugged in the Stim into the Mega Squirt computer, plugged in the AC/DC adapter and check voltage on the power supply. It is suppose to read 5V and my meter was showing 4.98V on all the pins I needed to check. YAH! So My power supply is functioning which is a relief because I was worried about the HUGE soldering iron I was using at the time.

Now it is time to solder up the serial communications. :)
