Engine transplant, 944S into an '83 944????

How difficult would that be if I had the entire 944S to scavenge off of?

I've done 911 transplants but '44s are new to me.

DME & AFM, entire engine wiring harness w/ ignition module, exhaust to at least the cat, if not all the way out.
I can't think of anything else.

Is the entire wiring harness difficult to pull out?

Thanks. That is what I may have. A race prepped '83 944 and a guy down the street with a body damaged 944S (for cheap).

I can probably deal with wiring but moving engine or transmission mounts, rerouting exhaust, etc. wouldn't be worth it.

So, I guess my big question is, would the S engine and maybe drive train bolt up to the '83?

Anything wrong with the 83 or are you searching for the infamous 16V High Torque Experience?!

No. I guess I'm wanting to keep the door open to more HP. I understand the S starts with 188hp where the 83 starts with 143. No?

Maybe the bigger question is, how much hp can you get out of the 83 engine without stringing it out? vs. putting in the S engine.

Getting more power out of an 8v really isn't easy or cheap. If the 16 valve motor and asorted parts is going for a sensible amount then a transplant wouldn't be a bad idea.

I don't believe the 16 valve has any more mid range than the 8 but it certainly has more top end and an early 83 car will weigh less than a late S model anyway, so you should get a nice sizeable power advantage.

completely ignorant post. The 16v cars are all about mid-range. power comes in at about 3500rpms. to do any serious driving you have to keep the motor running in the mid-range. That's the way they were made.

I think he said, "I don't believe..." which leaves appropriate room for doubt...

How about transmissions? Does one or the other keep you in that 3500+ range better? I guess before that, are they interchangeable?

S Tranny should swap in. Keep your old Ear Mounts and transfer them to the new Tranny. Don't think you will gain anything there unless the old one is bad.

Engine will bolt right in using same everything. Probable good time to get new mounts. Disconnect Quick release on DME and gently pry out firewall wire gasket and pull the whole thing in to engine. There's plenty of posts on how to pull the Engine. It's Not to bad with a cherry picker and two people. Would recommend the ball joint remover for Steering Tie Rod Ends and something like a pickle fork for removing the Steering rack U-joint connection. (Both are pretty tight) There's a 9 pin (I think) connector on old driver side firewall that connects to Fuel relay and gauges.
Don't remember if the S had the 14 pin Connector there. If 9, just plug and play. If 14 you would have to make adapter.
Keep your old Speed-o Cable on the front left wheel.
Should be nice swap.
Good luck.
