Went for my 1st 951 test drive today...
Went to look atthis car:
I really like the color scheme; exterior paint was okay - too many rock chips on the front for my taste, but I would be willing to overlook this if the car really caught my fancy - and the interior was incredible. White leather, no dash cracks, perfect seats. Wheels were in 100% perfect shape, tires were brand new. Took the car out for about 15 mins. Here's the good news: the steering/handling was FLAWLESS. One of the tightest cars I've ever driven. No rattles. Engine seemed to pull nice and strong, but not as much as I expected from a 951. I chock this up to my not pushing it too hard. Bad news? The brakes were terrible. My Olds has tighter brakes than this car. Even worse than this, there was something definitely wrong with the clutch/tranny; I had to practically FORCE it into gear, especially 2nd. The salesman claims that the clutch was just changed, and this may be the clutch still "breaking in". When I got my clutch changed, my car shifted fine. This hard shifting is similar to what my car experienced about a year ago (we still think something was causing the clutch to not completely disengage on shifting). I was very disappointed. Visually, the car is EXACTLY what I want, inside and out. But I think $9900 is way too much to ask for a 951 with these sorts of problems, IMHO. Guess I'm still looking...

Never heard of a clutch breaking in, I bet the AC "just needs a recharge" too.
Nice looking car, I always liked the different colored cars. Keep looking and Im sure you will find the right one. |

Actually, the AC blew nice and cold.
I wonder if the brakes and clutch problems are connected? Master or slave cyllinder, perhaps?

Way too much. A new clutch wouldnt have anything to do with shifting. Transmission needs a rebuild. The weak brakes are probably not a big deal it is probably just the flexible lines are worn. That said if you are not comfortable dont buy it. What you see is just the beginning of the many problems this car will have. Especially since a dealer is selling it. Just my thoughts. Good luck and have patience. The right one will come along.

you have a point cj... it *could* be connected... might just be really old/contaminated/wrong kind of break fluid...

Eh, I'm not touching it, despite how much i LOVE the color scheme.
There is another for sale in NC with the same scheme, seller posted the car on PCA. I wonder, if he replies to me, if someone would do a PPI for me...

Wow, from the pictures that looks like a brand new interior. I'm impressed by that...
But not worth it with those tranny problems.

The clutch could be dragging a little, would cause the symptoms you described.

I know those guys- bought from and sold to them several times..
-Not real bad people, but I'm always wary of any "low milage" cars they have... -see if they can show you records, I agree 9900 is alot for an 86, but for a 1 owner car that is more or less cosmetically immaculate close to 9k may not be a terrible deal, especialy if it has just had a clutch, -if it has also recently had the belts and w-pump done I think it may be a decent deal, just try to get records on that work if you are going to look at it further. From my experience with them, they are looking for 9k for this car, which is still alot, but not crazy $ Just remember, you can find one of these for 5-7k, but will it be a low miles, one owner car that is cosmetically as clean as this one?- or will it be beat on with torn seats, and boost gauges run through a cracked dash? |

I am very close to buying a car with the same color combo, for basically the same price, in much better condition.
