New to 944 - Track car... ?
Hey everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself, as i'm sure i'll be active a lot around here, should i complete the purchase of my first Porsche. So i'm sure i'll have loads of questions. A little background... I've always grown up around Porsche's. (came home from the hospital in my dad's 911). My uncle is a 928 freak and has always included me in a lot track days and activities since young. For the past 4 years now i've had a Subaru Impreza WRX, which i've been tracking as well, and even won a slalom event with it. I've always had a passion for racing and am now in a position to get my race license. Originally i had planned to do this in my Subaru, but after some debating i preffered having a dedicated track car. So Wednesday i was looking through classifieds and this morning i was looking at and test driving a stripped '84 944, imported from the u.s.a. The interior is pretty much gutted, with the exception of one race seat... So some questions about this particular car. It has new/rebuilt head on it, and it seemed to drive really well, power was good, and torque came on nicely. Revved freely to redline. Timing belt and water pumps were just done and there seemed to be no oil loss around the filter area. The body is in decent shape, with a lot of cosmetic blemishes but certainly no rust and body panels were straight. Should i be worried about any problems lower in the block? The man selling it (famous last words) said that the cylinder walls looked good... Beyond that to prepare it for track duty i know i'm gonna need tyres and brakes? Any tips on acquiring upgraded parts here in the Netherlands? How well does the suspension hold up on a 944? Sorry for the bit of a long rant, but i feel almost a bit overwhelmed now that i'm actually about to/possibly be joining the Porsche family... -Daniel |

Hey Daniel...You will want to guard against any damage to rod bearing number 2 from the oil all drifting to one side of the oil pan (do a search here on the topic and you'll find many posts). There are at least two different fixes for that. Also google Lindsey racing and check out their website, they are highly respected here and seem to offer many great products for the 944. There are many individuals here that really know suspension so I'm not going to comment on that but hopefully someone will. Do a search and you will find many threads on it...a lot of good reading.

A few things I would look at ....
- You covered belts, waterpump, rebuilt head.....so now get a compression test and that will put you at ease on the internals. - rod bearings can definitely be an issue. There are a number of reasons that have been speculated for #2 but either way be prepared to swap them out in the near future. (before they decide to let go) - Clutch - check for how much you have left... - when you get around to looking at the suspensiong, brakes and tires, pull the cvs and repack them. - check the balljoints on the front control arms as well. Track cars like to beat them to death. Otherwise it will make a fun toy.
