951 Driving me crazy

So maybe its only a putt to make me crazy not a drive. But here is my problem. My 951 has started to make a clattering noise. The noise start after the car warms up to running temp. It goes clack, clack for 5- 10 seconds and then stops for about the same time, then it starts again. The strangest think is today as i was looking at it i hit the AC button and the noise stopped at once. After playing with it several times every time I hit the AC button to turn the AC on the noise stopped. The AC does not work earlier this summer we filled it with feron and it worked for 15 minutes the was blowing hot air again. Did I burn up AC compresosr or AC bearings can the fan belt be taken off of AC. Were on the front of the car is the AC ?
Thanks for your help.

George

The AC compressor is on the driver's side of the engine. Basically you have the J boot, underneath is the alternator, under that is the AC compressor.

I pulled out my AC compressor and condensor this year. One of the best moves I ever made.

No a/c in Texas = Very BAD. What you are hearing is the compressor clattering meaning that if you continue to run it, it will go bang sometime soon and the compressor will be totally trashed and probably spread some junk throughout the whole a/c system. I would suggest that you just turn it off (since it doesn't work anyway), pull the fuse and leave it off and everything will be fine. If you want your a/c to work, take it in to someone and have them replace the compressor. Where you live a/c isn't real important, so if it doesn't bother you to be without a/c, then just drive it.

Thanks Razorback for the reply the trouble is that the clattering happens with the AC OFF and stops when the AC inturned on.
That is what is driving me nuts.

Sorry, I read your post incorrectly. The compressor is on the bottom side and it would probably be best to remove the belly pan to inspect it. After getting the facts straight, it sounds more like the clutch bearings or the maybe the compressor mounting bolts are loose, broken or missing. I would put it up on stands and turn the compressor off and start the engine and see if the compressor is moving around while the engine is running. If not, then I would replace the clutch bearings.
