Oil level after an oil change..

Hey guys, had a 924, but new to the 944, fell in love with the car.

Just finished the first oil and filter change and looking at the manual specs porsche calls for the engine to take 6.87 US QT. i just added exactly 6, and noticed the dip stick was reading full. started the car, let it run for a little bit, maybe a min or two, then checked the level again, its sitting right on the full mark on the dip stick (first line from the top on the flat part of the stick).

am i missing something here? what about the other .87 quarts???!

Thanks for the help and this message board has helped me with numerous projects already!

Kevin

did you let the engine cool prior to doing the change?
the better part of the 0.87 quarts may be dispersed among the engine..

thanks guys for the quick reply, ive been keeping a close eye on it, and the oil level was actually about 1cm above the full line, so back under the car i went and ended up draining out almost half a qt! ouch. After bringing the level down slightly its reading just at the first line from the top, Oil pressures good.

when i changed the oil the engine was cold, i let the oil run out for a pretty long time once the plug was initially out.

99% of the stuff im finding online ALL says the oil is about 5.5qts, its just REALLY strange that the manual says what it does.

Yea I have noticed that too. Many 944/924S owners I know have had different oil readings. In mine I can put 6.0qrts and be at full after I run it, SO Go figure. Im still really surprised that they use sooo much oil, Most 4 cylinders I know of use about 4 to 5 qrts max LOL. Guess Porsche wanted extra cooling/lube

Now it has been a while since I changed my oil myself but I sorta remember my 924S taking MORE than 6.5 quarts. I remember having to keep filling because I was sure it would have been full but it wasn't. And it wasn't leaking anywheres AFAIK. So who knows.

6.87 quarts sounds more like what a 951 takes. Sure you weren't reading the wrong line in the manual?

6 quarts in mine. Too much oil and the crank will be splashing around in it.
