New Tires
Info for those interested....My sweet '84 NA had some fairly new Kumho Ecsta Supras on it when I bought it about 18 months ago and they seemed OK for a while, but...... lately my car was developing a howling noise that I thought was rear wheel bearings, and the front-end shimmy that had always been there a little was becoming present at almost any speed. The car was also getting really bad when crossing any changes in the pavement, really grabbing, jerking and pulling sideways. I was thinking that most of these problems we being caused by worn struts and/or front-end parts, so I have been accumulating new parts and preparing to doing the entire job at one time with new tires, Bilsteins, wheel bearings, control arm bushings, and the works. I was researching tires on Tire Rack and came across a bunch of reviews raving about some new General (don't laugh yet) Exclaim UHP's. I decided that for the price of $70 for the 225-45 x 17 fronts and $80 for the 245-45 x 17 rears, and $35 shipping I would give them a try. They were delivered in 2 days, and I had them mounted and balanced at a local shop for $50 for all 4. I just took it for a long spirited ride, and it's like a new car!Smooth, quiet, no shimmy anywhere, the wheel grab is gone! They have a great looking tread and are supposed to be great in wet conditions. The wear rating is 380, which is incredible for this type of tire. Awesome tires, especially for the price. Like most 944 owners, the money I have saved will come in handy for other maintenance and upgrades. I am interested to see if anyone else on this forum has tried them.....long term report?

General makes high quality tires. While not known for ultra high performance, they are well known among the truck fans.
Our local cop cars are all riding on Generals. At least they were a while back when I spoke with one of the head guys. Said they offered better grip than most, and still lasted long enough to make it affordable to outfit the entire fleet. The only tires that offered better performance would wear out too quickly. |
