944 turbo caliper kits
I want to powercoat 944 turbo calipers and cannot seem to find the rebuild kits?
Can anyone point me to an online source? My local powdercoater wants to split the calipers as he is concerned with fluid weeping out when he cooks them. I am not so sure this is a good idea and would appreciate any feedback. Presumably there are o-rings inside the caliper halves. Is this a standard o-ring or do I need to get something special? Thanks Robert

I think Heat is used with powder coat.. which is bad for rubber seals. Rebuild can be done. Also maybe consider just using High temp paint, which will not require rebuild (if they're good).
http://www.************************/productpage.aspx?pid=101137&name=Brake+Caliper+Paint Same store sells rebuild kits.

i reccomend the paint... you get a similar look at a fraction of the cost and hassle. On top of that, they're behind wheels anyway.. just tell people they're powder coated. LOL

I am in Thailand so powder coating is not really that expensive, and he is my best friend to boot.
Yes they are cooked at 200C and my concern is damaging the internal o-ring. There apparently is a concern that the fluid will weep when cooked and cause problems with the powder. The 944 turbo repair kit remains a problem. The link provided and others that I can find on-line do not have the 36/40mm 4 pot repair kits. Does anyone have a source for this kit? Robert

944Online.com sells them. They are not cheap though, do what you can to salvage the pistons and just buy the seals. The pistons are the most expensive part. Use compressed air and a c-clamp to get each piston out. Use the clamp to 'throttle' the piston so each one comes out half way. With the pistons out halfway you can work them out the rest of hte way by hand. Only use channel-locks or pliers as a last resort, as 9/10 times you will damage the piston bore.
I do not advise splitting the caliper halves. There is a very good chance they will NOT seal correctly again. And you will probably have to get both surfaces machined perfectly flat again. I have heard this from a few people (Whos advice i actually trust) aswell as read it from Brembo themselves. With the pistons out of the caliper and the crossovers removed, its very easy to get all of the remaining brake fluid out. Just get compressed air with an air nozzle attachment that has the rubber tip on it. The rubber tip gives more than an adequete seal to blow all the brake fluid out. Just make sure you have something protecting your eyes and face.

thanks for confirming my thoughts on splitting the calipers as I was taught not to do this
Went to 944online but Holy Crap - lets see 54.00 a pot x 16 = 864.00 !!! Where to buy the seals? Pistons are probably OK and I am doing this for cosmetic reasons only. If I do need pistons I can machine 316L ones here for about 8.00 ea. Thanks Robert

My friend and i were only able to find a place that sells the seals with the dust boots. If you have the seals pictured on 944Online, we were unable to find these sold seperatley without the pistons. I am sure there is someplace that sells them, but we werent able to find one.
http://www.zeckhausen.com/Brembo/Consumables.htm#Rebuild Again, you need to verify these are the right type of seals for your car. I think 9 out of 10 caliper sets ive seen from a 944 Turbo used the seal shown on 944 Online. If you do happen to find a supplier for the other types of seals, i would appreciate if you post and let us know. Good luck. (Btw, i think paint comes out just as good as the powder coat..however it dosent stand up as well to brake cleaner).

I wonder what is so special about these seals and scraper ring?
Perhaps a hydraulic house can match them up. Surely Brembo does not have them specially made? The seals are clearly available c/w pistons so there is a source somewhere. I just need to find it and I presume that I am not the only one.
