Can a camshaft wear out?

Can the lobes of the cam wear enough to make a noticeable difference? I'm talking 270 000 miles worth of wear.

Depends on oil flow... If there has been a problem lubricating the cam tower, it is possible. I have seen plugged oil lines cause the hardened surface wear down on the cam. Once the lifters start pushing on the non hardened surface, it wont take long before it wears away a considerable portion of the lobes!

Good luck!
Nick

Cams are a wear item. If the car was serviced regularly, oil changed regularly, it might last that long driven moderately. If you really want to find out, take the head cover off and inspect the cam. Or pull some of the caps and try to take a gaze.

If that is the original top end for that engine you'll see plenty of wear on the cam.

Hehe I've driven it hard for the last 100K and I bought it at 166K

I'm considering swapping my 87 n/a cam into my turbo S, but if cams can get miled out, then it may not happen. How would I go about inspecting a cam for wear?

It's actually quite noticeable even to the naked eye....the lobe will be more round than flat. As Nick already mentioned, when the hardened top surface wears, it starts to flatten very quickly. Compression checks will sometimes help spot the problem as the valve doesn't open all the way and if the problem is an intake, the compression will be lower. I've never been able to spot an exhaust problem with a compression check though. I'll check the shop manual, but I'm sure there are tolerances there that tell you condition of the cam. One thing I have spotted with an extremely worn cam is poor idleing and you can take the plug wire off while it's idleing and it won't make a big difference in the engine speed but it will be some...much less of a difference than the other cylinders in comparison...if that makes any sense.

Hey Justin,

Wouldn't swap a N/A Cam into a turbo. They have very different lobe profiles. You'll loose POWER! Also a good time for head re-build and new springs... I'd send in the Cam to be re-worked. They actually add metal and re-shape and finish plate. They can even be designed for more power or moving the target power band. These guys did mine and got me more power. http://www.webcamshafts.com/ More power = more fun! Check you end cap finishes, cause they're probably thin as well.

Jim, yep, different profile is what I'm after.

1983-1985 944, all 951:

Stock lift: 12 mm intake, 11 mm exhaust
Exhaust duration 220°

1985.5-1988 944:

Stock lift: 12 mm intake, 12 mm exhaust
Exhaust duration: 228°

Your webcam (grind 274 I'm assuming)

Intake and Exhaust Lift: .480" (12mm)
Exhaust Duration: 234°

Lobe centres I'm pretty sure are all the same and there is no overlap in either stock cam. The late n/a cam is kindof half way to the webcam, but still no overlap... which I'll bet your webcam has.
