Hand brake cable replacement

I've had the 944S about month, I knew the E-brake had no holding power when I bought it. I thought it was gonna take some shoes and cable adjustment but after taking the wheels off yesterday I noticed that the cable seems to be broke.
Is this a real pain in the arse to replace or is it a simple fix?

I heard it's a real PITA...That's all I can say.

Check the Haynes manual.

It must be...Haynes manual gives a little info in Section 8. It says to find the metal plug with the with the cable housing coming out of the center. Pull sharply to loosen the plug and detach the cable assembly from the body.....Sounds easy on a new car but were talking about a 20 year cable housing. If I manage to yank the old one out, will the new one just slide right in......I guess I'll find out tomorow.
Did a search and found an old thread about this, it had no replies. I found plenty of threads about the handle assembly being broke by the way.

I had to do this job last year, and yes it was a bit of a game. There are two on this car, both cables connect to a central pivot arrangement which tucks in above the tube that runs across the car at the rear, access to this gave me a hard time, also most of the pivot points were siezed, especially at the handbrake shoe end. The part that enters the body was pretty tight and needed grips. grease the new one at this point, in fact wipe copper grease on all of the visible inner cable.

Good news and bad news. The good...cable is not broke. The bad, e-brake assembly is gone...nothing! I thought the cable was broke because there was no resistance at when I pulled the handle. The cables just fed into an empty housing. There is an 84' parts car close by that I can get the parts needed for $20.00 provided the e-brake guts are the same for an 87'

I think the parts for the e-brake are the same on all models.
