New 944S2 Owner

Hi everybody,
I've been lurking on the site for a few months which helped me pick out the 1989 944S2 coupe that I just bought. It's my first 944 and my first Porsche for that matter. I had the car checked out by a local Porsche shop. It checked out clean except for brakes and tires which I knew about. The previous owner did a couple of DE's with Hawk Blacks and they shredded the rotors.

Anyway, that brings me to my first question: brakes. I'm trying to find some slotted rotors for this car but am not having much luck. I can find cross-drilled but I've had trouble with those getting hairline cracks. I like the Power Slot rotors that I have on my VW's but they don't make a fitment for the S2's. Any help???

As far as pads go - I was thinking either Hawk HPS for street and Hawk Blues for track. Or maybe Hawk HP+ for both scenarios. Any comments on the BHP pads that Pelican sells?

My first DE in the car will be at VIR on 11/18 and 11/19 with the Audi Club. Are any other forum members going to be there? I'll be the guy trying to figure rear-wheel drive handling!!

Congrats on your new purchase and welcome to the board. I'm almost certain that you can buy slotted rotors for the S2. I'm sure others will chime in here but try www.*****************.com.

Regardless, its been said that the track performance vs. expense is not really worth it. You be the judge, but I do know that blue ATE fluid is a must for any DE.

Oh - and we want pics!!!!!!!!

Thanks Johnny,

I forgot to check Paragon while shopping. They do have slotted rotors but they are different from what I'm used to. Do most 944 people just use the stock vented rotors for DE's?

The Super Blue will be added when I do the brake work.

Pictures will be forthcoming. I should be able to snap some on Sunday.

I think the jury is out on slotted rotors as well. Performance increases are way less than cost increases. Mostly bling in my book.

Make sure theres great cooling, and use good pads, and that's your best performance gain. But expect good high temp pads to go thru rotors a bit more quickly than stock pads.

Carbotech has been getting good reviews lately among the guys I race with, although I'm still using Hawk Blues.

Im kind of in the same boat as you. I bought a 924s so relegate my GTI back to full time daily driver status. I did my first HPDE w/ Audi Club at Shanendoah last weekend. Ill also be at VIR with them in Novemeber. Ill be paddocked towards the back of the paddock with all my VW buddies so come by and say hi. NASA is sanctioning a VW/Audi (but open to all makes) track day on monday the 20th so you can make it a 3 day weekend.

Ive always preferred non slotted rotors (much lighter on the wallet ) so I cant help with the that. As far as pads Im running PFC 97s. Shenandoah isnt the most demanding on brakes when you're as slow as I am but no complaints here. They are available locally at OG Racing in Sterling so thats a plus too.

Thanks everybody for the brake help!!! I just ordered the stock vented rotors all the way around and Hawk HP+ pads. The car had Super Blue, so I'll be putting in ATE Gold. The PO installed brake cooling ducts from a 968 so I should be set for the track.

I washed the car yesterday and snapped a couple pics. I'll try and post them tonight. The car looks pretty good except the front wheels have a lot of brake dust corrosion. They are not the stock wheels. They are 17" wheels from a 993? I think. I'm guessing that I'll have to blast those and respray. The clear adhesive stone guards are also all spider-webbed. Those will be replaced.

Jsilverman - I had taken my previous track car (Jetta GLX) about as far as it would go. It was fairly quick but I couldn't do much with it in the tight stuff and it even had Autotech's Clubsport suspension. From Nascar Bend to the straight leading to the uphill esses at VIR was especially miserable. I'll try and track you down at VIR. We always end up parking near the gas pumps. Look for a red 944S2, a black WRX, and a silver R32.

Ah yes the dreaded VR6 understeer. My other car is an 03 GTI VR6 so I know all about it. These cars are so much different than the VWs. They actually turn!!! You also have to be more smooth with the throttle and steering inputs or youll upset the car. What year/color is your VW? Were you at VIR with ACNA in april? We are usually pretty easy to find at VIR. Look for a blue R32 with orange HPA stickers all over it, a couple mk5s, 2 red mk4s, at least one other blue R32, and possibly a bright orange mk2 16v (#01 General Li), maybe a 337 and of course my 924. If I dont see you Ill try to come over and say hi. What group are you running in? I cant wait to get back on track!!

Well I know the HPA R32... That one is hard to miss! I was at VIR in April with the Audi Club. I was driving a black mk3 Jetta in the yellow group. It's pretty stock looking but if know mk3's you can tell that it sits lower. It has been a great car but it is now for sale if you know anybody who is shopping in the NoVA area. My driveway is starting to look like a used car lot.

I'm in the yellow group again in November. I toyed with the idea of registering in the blue group. I'm glad I didn't since I won't be 100% comfortable with the car yet.
