Fuel filter, which fittings?
i figured id finish off my vacation week with the fuel filter change, easier said than done..
the filter i got from Pelican has a fitting, and on both ends there are brass... under my car, im having a B&^ch of a time getting the lines off. currently im working on the intake side of the filter. i'm trying to turn the nut on the fuel line while holding the large fitting that plugs into the fuel filter. am i doing this right? OR... should i be holding the fuel filter itself with a large wrench 7/8th (downstream of the large brass fitting), then turning the 19MM brass fitting?

yeah i figured Kyle! thanks
![]() no such luck. turns out, there was so much rust on the fitting the wrench i was using was 1 mm too big on the fuel line nut, after cleaning the nut off i got the correct sized wrench on there put more PB on it, and some more elbow power and it came loose with a audible 'snap'. the fuel filter had no lettering, numbers or anything on it that would indicate a date. it just said "IN" stamped into the side so im not sure if iwas original or not. I will tell you guys one thing for sure... my car used to have a 50 RPM idle hunt, it would hunt from 800- 850, now its gone, or appears so! i tipped it upside down into a clean container... check this out... eewwwwwwww....... ![]()

Your fuel pump is probably very happy now that you changed the filter.

Yuk! Looks like you made a good call changing it. Makes you wonder what the tank looks like doesn't it?

It depends who you ask. Some say you should do it every year on older cars. So figure every 12k miles or so. I personally change mine every 20k.

Now might be a good time to clean the gas tank Pre Filter Screen. You just wrench it out and clean it off and back in. Looks like a foose ball. But becarefull cause it's like over 100bucks to replace. Mine looked like the part of a cat was wrapped around the stopper in the bathroom sink.

I've been missing my cat....was it black and white?
![]() It varies really. Quality of gas you put in your car makes a big difference. I knew a guy once that saved a couple cents per gallon on gas at this particular station but it was so dirty that he was replacing filters every three months. I stick to the newer stations (although that's no guarantee either but at least you know the tanks are not rusted as bad as the older ones) and my filters go for a very long time. My Grand Prix is a 96 and I've changed it once. But if I were doing it properly, I think Jon has the right interval.

i change the FF on my explorer every 5 or so oil changes.
i was reading about the fuel spay nightmares of our 944s, even read one of the members went the hospital after getting gas in his ear. i was well prepared under there, towels over me, eye shield on, rags rubber banded around my wrist, ready for the worst, containers handy. but only about a cup of fuel dripped out. A pleasant surprise. The car sat overnight, and the line was pinched tight. i was really worried i was going to break a fitting or line, and of course there was a fresh full tank above my head! ![]() on my truck my whole arm gets drenched in gas, and thats with the system depressursed. Its awful. Explorer with a 5.0. its so bad i wear a t shirt that i can promptly throw in the garbage .. after doing the 944, I was very happy that I could wear my greasy shirt another day ![]()
