1980 924 shift coupling repair!
The stick has a numb feel when shifting into 2nd and 4th. If you place the shift right, just by pushing the stick all the way forward where you know the gear should be, you can get it in there 80% of the time on the first try.
Sometimes by rowing though all the gears, engaging reverse, the feel would come back. Now this is rare, and the above problem is the norm.

I just felt the shift linkage coupling near the trans on the guide rod. There is no rubber or plastic peice holing it to the knob. so it is just hovering over it, which would explain why the shifting is on/off.
So - that is a hard place to get to! Pulling the trans is a bit over my head. Plus, it will cost me more than I paid for the car to get somebody to fool with it I bet. Can I not just get the new coupling, and transplant the rubber/plastic peice into the old part? Any thoughts? Oh, and I see that I probably need to get the bushings at the shift lever, but the coupling is definitely the bigger problem.

They didn't make a 924'S' in 1980. You have an early 924. Try wwwl924.org for a more on topic repair replies.

Yes you are right- way to show what a noob I am! I did atempt to edit that thread title, but you can only see my edit on the thread page itself.
Actually the car is a turbo originally, with a na 2 liter in it now. Still, is there no hope for any advice on this site?

Some hope. A few have 924's. Best to cover your bases and also check out www.924.org. My first two Porsche's were 924's. A 78 and a 79. The 78 was stolen on a business trip to Phoenix. Loved driving it. The plane trip back sucked.
As to the trans on the 80; IIRC it's much the same as the early 944's with a single shifting rod/link going from the shift lever to the trans. At least the factory manuals show it as such. I'm not familiar with your description of your problem. The linkage from the shift lever couples to the shift linkage on the trans with a steel sleeve. There are levers and such on top of the trans over the rear of the drivers side axle. See picture. Do you see anything in the image that you are having problems with? ![]()

![]() This diagram is what I have. #10 is the peice that is worn. It is an angle joint, with a bushing, maybe plastic or rubber - don't know until I get the new part. My hope is that instead of unscrewing the whole peice, I will be able to just put the non-metal part into the existing part. Here's a picture of the part close up. I did read a little about it on the 924.org site - thank you and it is a great resouce, a favorite so far. I think they call my transmission a snailsell type.

Older 924's use two rods to the transmissions. So yes you do have a much different setup than those of us with the later trans.
By the way the "other" 924's for 1980 used the same basic design trans as the early 944's. Uses a single shift rod/link. ![]()
