will not maintain idle, or run at hi throttle

my 87 na had an alternator replaced, and the p.s. pump brackets repaiered.

Now, it will not idle, just dies like the gas or spark is cut off. also, if you try to keep it at hi rpm(2000 ish..), it will slowly lose rpm in about 5 seconds, and die.

i can drive it if the pedal is active in moving the car thru the gears, and sustain a higher rpm, like abouvre 2500 rpm.

fresh fuel added to tank.

i will be moving the car 20 miles to home tomorrow, and would like to fix it.
ideas appreciated.

vacuum leak.
if you can keep the car alive with the gas... that's my vote.

thats my initial guess too. it used to run just dandy.

will know more when she is home. last time i tried to dx it, it was over 100 degrees in K.C., sweat burning my eyes.

My guess: TPS (throttle pos. sensor). it has idle, throttle, and Wide Open Throttle settings.

Todwic is alive!

my car had similar symptoms when i changed out the airbox. although im the last one that should be giving advice around here, i second the notion for vacuum... in my case the car would start, i could rev it but it would immediately trail off and die.

what it ended up being was a vacuum line that connected UNDER the intake J-boot.

Well based on the repairs I would guess the Alt belt is not up to tension and slipping causing the Alt to not produce the proper energy to run properly, poor spark- poor idle, not enough current to run the FP.

When running and the RPM's are increased the belt will tighten up. As the belt tightens so it slips less if any giving the alt the ability to generate the energy thus at high rpm it runs fine.

eldorado, EMBpilot, its alive~!!!!

well, guys, i forgot to thank you all for the input. It sure looked like that bottom vacumm line was on the nub, but it wasn't.

After i put the new alternator on, the hoses were somewhat rearranged, but it looked to be on.

i had to spray the line with silicone, then rearrange the lines to get it on, its quite a stretch, and its hard to tighten the hose clamp in cramped, underside, out of sit quarters, the metric way.SmileWavy
