replace my front calipers?

I just got a 87 944S with ABS. The front brakes seem to be sticking so I bought some rebuilt calipers. I was about to replace them when I read in the Haynes manual that "repair work on ABS systems in not recommended for the home mechanic." Can I get some advice on how to proceed? Caliper replacement is usually pretty straightforward; twist a few bolts, bleed it when you're done. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Re: replace my front calipers?

If you're not touching the sensor or actuator ring and the caliper(s) are the same then you're good to go.

Unless your servicing the actual ABS pump, dont worry about working on everything else. There is nothing really special about the addition of ABS, its the same exact setup almost.

Twist bolts, bleed and your done. You got it.

What they said. Just replace and bleed as on a non-ABS car. You're not actually working on the ABS system, you're working on the foundation brake system.

The ABS system comprises the ECU (detached on these cars), HU (hydraulic unit - pump motor, valves, etc), the relays and valve coils attached to the HU (later ABS systems have a smaller attached ECU where the control board is integrated in with the relays and valve coils and drivers on top of the HU), obviously the sensors and tone rings, and misc wiring connecting it all (that's what I get for working at Bosch on these for 7-odd years ;) ).

Thanks everyone. That's what I wanted to hear.
