Alternator-A/C Belt HELP!!

Just went to replace the drive belts on my son's 84 944 and the A/S-Alternator belt is too damn long. It's the correct belt according to the books and our host (I bought both belts from Pelican-Great Service), I confirmed this with John.

PO told me he had changed the Alternator, now I wonder if possibly the pulley is incorrect? Can anyone give me the correct diameter of the alternator pulley? This belt seems to be about 1" too long. I reinstalled the old belt and changed the PS belt as it was the one glazed and squealing.

Help!!!

My alt pulley is fairly small, about 2 1/4 inches outside, couldn't get to the inside coz of the belt, cone etc. Yours must be really small if the belt's too long.

That's about what mine appears to be. I'll have to do some checking, maybe a mis-installation by the PO (He didn't seem too handy)

I guess you've done it, but have you got any adjustment left on the "double-ended" belt tensioner/adjuster? It's the 17mm one from memory.

yeah, maybe the po installed a smaller belt and adjusted the "double ended" tensioner rod all the way down. loosen up the alt and see how far you can adjust it back, an inch doesn't sound that bad.

No,I ran out of adjustment before all the pulleys were in contact. I calculated the new belt to be about 40" (1005mm) the old one on the car is 38.5" or about 1.5" shorter. The old belt is in good shape so I'll just leave it until I decide to pull down the front of the engine to do the timing belts in the spring. This is my 17 year old son's daily driver he goes 5 mi to school and back and maybe another 25-40 mi per week. The timing belts were done just before we bought the car 2 months ago by a very reputable Porsche shop so I needn't worry about this for 4-5 months, but I do want to make it right when I dig into it at that time.SmileWavy
