Pilot tool selection-Eng.#: Another way?

I am getting ready to change the seals for the oil cooler in my 87 924s. In order to do the job I will need either a 9262/1 tool if I have an xxxx-02 sender unit, or I will need a 9215 tool if I have an xxxx-11 sender unit.

To determine what sender unit I have, I check the engine #. Riiiigght?...

Problem is I canot see the engine #, I THINK it is on the driver side of the block, just foreward of the sensor, next to the bell housing. that area is inaccesable due to a really big chunk of wiring harness securely bolted to the block. I have tried and cannot get to it.

Is there another way to determine what sender I have? either through visual on the sensor housing, or would I have to inspect the sensor by removing it. I know it seems odd to do, but I have tried for hours and just can't get an engine #, I have looked for hours and have to conclude it is in the one place I just cannot get to.

If it helps the car was built 3/87 and has an engine code of 0046/28 stamped on the case on the passenger side.

Got it!

On an 87 924s...
the engine number is inded on the driver side just in front of the sensor. to read it, i needed to clean the block by spraying in some degreaser and gently pry forward the harness, out of the way, then, with a strong flashlight you can just make out the numbers using a little mirror. Turns out since I have a manual and the Engine number is above 01920, I have the later model sender xxxx-02 and indeed need the "arbor" or special tool 9262/1 as I thought.
