Air Intake

Anyone have any suggestions regarding a cold air intake system for a 944 NA. I have searched high and low and cant seem to find a decent system. Plenty that are for the 951 but none for a NA. Right now I have a system that I built into the factory air box where I ran a hose down to the front of the car and have a scoop in the bumper so its sort of a forced air induction system. Not sure if it helps or not but I would like to go to a normal cold air intake. Any suggestions of who has them or how to make one would be appreciated.

The stock airbox is a cold air intake already. It draws air from the drivers side fender.

There is a big debate over whether its possible to improve on the stock design or not. The key points are that a cone filter may help suck in more air, but you are sucking in hot air. Now everyone argues that at running speed the air temperature under the hood matches or is near ambient so it dosent matter.

my car used to have a K&N filter attached to some pretty nicely made custom aluminum pieces that bolted onto the AFM. Even though it looked professional it still freaked me out.

The car started and idled very well. in fact it ran with a pretty significant vacuum leak. Once i put the stock box back on, it didnt want to run until i nailed down the leak. but since the stock box is on, i think the 'flow' is more restricted but i feel like it still runs just as well. For some reason its quieter as well.

after replacing my shifter boot with a home-made hand stitched leather one, and putting the stock air box back in, I no longer have to worry about noise in the cab unless I'm doing 130+kph!

which is never... *shifty eyes.. runs away*

lol- kyle

as some have said, the stock airbox and snorkel is a cold air setup already. i have tried with an open airbox top, a cone filter, and the stock setup. the upside to the k&n cone or the open top is the beautiful intake noise when you open the throttle a bit, the downside is that, sitting at lights, you get heat soak in the intake charge. i have noticed (even here in FL) a significant jump in power/torque when cool air gets back to the engine after the car gets moving again... i would even almost describe it as a jolt. i have also heard of dyno tests where the car was run with a stock paper air filter, and without, and the horsepower did not change at all. if you want the noise and a reduced heat soak effect, some suggest drilling holes in the air box top (don't do the bottom, for obvious reasons). my advice is, if you want the best setup to deliver cold air to the engine, to leave the stock setup. if you want lots of glorious noise, either drill holes or get a cone filter. personally, i prefer the stock airbox (i'm waiting to see what's going on with the MAF setup over on rennlist to possibly take out some of the restriction on the intake.

good luck with whatever you decide to do!

stock system is nicely design , great flow .you not gonna gain much from cone and the stock air flow sensor, unless u do conversion maf or some crazy intake mainfold ........

Stock system with high flow filter elemnt way to go . Beside many of the cone fabrications live the belt cover suction hose unattached or mounted behind the filter element , which is kinda goofy idea. the idea behind that hose design was to keep belt area cleaner by sucking the air thru the air element not behind directly to the intake . All the crap pulled out from belt cover should stop on the filter . If u live it unattached all the dirt will stay and cumulate inside the belt compartment.
I mean the amount of dirt is very minimal , ocassionally some tiny belt shreds, enought to lower life of belts , pulleys bearings life...
(there is range of mid rpm that have a good tendency to vibe the belts which sort of increase friction even bounce on the inner cover wall .Some ppl complign about homming nise from the belt...)
hehe so way out of topic lol sorry . And i know someone will say that this hose is not a big deal and i agree. But the idea is to make it better or at leas as good as intended design. Beside guys at porsche prytty much maxed out 2.5N/A on their drawing boards not much room for improvements.(p.s. sorry for poor english)

ERAU944 ,
good idea with the driled holes !!U know lots of the time there is more excitment in the way cone sounds rather than performance factor. Hmm how about some fancy tuned cuts with butterfly insers , it could sound like waste gate...
have fun with the project xupkid2

yes, there is quite a pleasing sound when you remove the top of the airbox or put a cone filter on. i drove for a few months like that, then got tired of the weird temprament after stoplights, and put the stock intake back on. the only reason i have a K&N filter in my car is so that i can clean it and not have to buy a new filter... that's the ONLY reason, the paper elements actually work better, and that is not the restriction in the airflow, so getting a 'high flow' element will do nothing to help your horsepower.

I drilled the lid on my airbox... sounds great. No difference in power at stoplights or anything like that.

Works well with the vented nose panel also i guess. Ive been meaning to do a cleaner look with a half inch hole saw...my drilled method is a bit of a mess looking.

I got the Cone cause it looks cool and sound Great. I hear the drilled top box is the best performer thoe. Kinda bulky but works!

see, i thought the cone looked cool too... ran it for a year.. but switched back to the stock air box, and man i like the look of the full engine bay... and not some monstrous hole surrounded by a bracket-less cone air filter.
