Intermediate Shift Linkage
I am currently in the works of purchasing my first Porsche 944 N/A. It is a 1987 5-Speed. During the test drive I had my attention directed to the shifter vibrating or "buzzing" at a certain RPM... around 3000. I have read dozens of forums before signing up and to no avail.
I was very curious as to what was causing this and the PO said its the Bushing on top of the transmission... the only "bushing" there to my knowledge is the plastic piece attached to the Intermediate Shift Linkage that attaches to the tranny... which to replace cost a whopping $240 here on Pelican...this is the only damn place I have found it... part number 94442401302 revised from 94442401300. Has anyone replaced this or modified it in some way to cause this irritable vibration/buzzing to stop??? Does anyone know where i could find this part cheaper? eBay has nothing... The Pivot Bearing is being replaced... I have that in hand. I am not sure about the pin itself. The PO had modified the shifter to be shorter... he cut it... Could this have cause the buzzing. I will ask him tonight if this noise started before or after he modified the shifter. Please be gentle... I am new to Porsche's and this site. I am inexperienced. Thanks a million!!!

Ah, he modified the shifter. The factory shifter is weighted to prevent rattle. It is kind of a slightly squished heavy wall lead pipe deal that goes over the shift lever. The factory shift knob attaches to the weight. You probably have an aftermarket shift knob if the weight is missing. I shortened my shifter 1-1/2 inches, but I retained the weight during the modification so I could keep the factory shift knob - and to keep it from rattling.

It looks stock (other than being shorter) and he told me it has a new shift boot.
Here's a pic... ![]() So, because it is weighted there is possibly no way i could get rid or the noise unless I weight it or change it back to stock? Thanks

Put it into any gear and wiggle it side to side. If there is more than a 1/2 inch of play the pin on the lever has worn into an hour glass shape. Have to replace the lever.

You can grind the weld off the outside of the pin and knock it out. Have to replace it with a 3/8" bolt that has a long shank (no threads). Think it's a 2 3/4 or a 3 inch bolt. Have to use two jam nuts against the shift lever, one each side, to secure it. Also to adjust the play with the shift rod. Need a spring washer and two flat washers too. Was a thread on it about two years ago.

thanks SoCal. I'll try that out once I get it. Hopefully it'll be cured.

i am in the process of replacing that pin right now, 3/8" will work but is still loose, you are better off getting metric #10 Bolt, fits in better, still has a little play but much less than 3/8"

I initially did what SoCal is talking about. I ended up just replacing the shifter altogether. It's a better way to go if you have the money and it takes a lot less time.

Replacing the shift lever is better than using a bolt. Depends on what you have laying around and your finances.
