924S Door Hinge Repair

Folks,
Last week, I noticed that the driver's side door ('87 924S) was striking the latch pin much too hard. The door was hard to close.

After playing with the hinges, I finally noticed that the upper hinge has started to tear out of the A-Pillar and is allowing the door to sag under its own weight. (mea culpa, mea culpa - no more resting my arm on the door to get my middle-aged 230 lbs down on the seat!
Anyway, what I'm planning is to take the door completely off, carefully protecting the fender and visible parts of the A-Pillar, and carefully and slowly spotting the tear back together with a MIG welder. I'll clean the paint off before starting and then cover the weld with guards red paint or something close.
It will pass with the door closed, but the car will be even less a concours candidate than it is now. (not even close!)
Anybody had/fixed this problem? Any thoughts on my idea?

Thanks,
924SBob (the other one)

Sounds like you got it all figured out. Take pictures and make a procedure out of it.

Weld on pillar

Unless you are a particularly good welder, consider having a pro run the bead(s)/Spots. A little grinding and some fill work will go a long way to minimizing the cosmetics impact.

A pro could do it quickly, lessening the paint discoloration in the area. Welding on sheet metal is tricky. A pic would be nice to see what exactly you are dealing with.

While on the subject, my door seems to work just fine except it is really hard to press the latch to open. Hard for me and even harder for my 10 year old. Is this common? How to fix? Both sides.

I've had two 924's and both had the drivers side door hinge come loose. Both were welded, one not too successfully. The hinge is thick and the sheet metal of the pillar is thin. It aint as easy as it looks. If it comes loose again I'm going to fashion a backer plate to stick in the pillar.

Progress

I went to a local body shop and they are going to do the welding and a simple paint coverup. It's scheduled for next week. I'll try to get some pictures to post before, during, and after.

The tech agrees with JonA. We'll see how it works out.

Success

My local body shop did the welding. I'm going to get some Guards Red touch up paint to finish the job. Seems to work just fine. Time will tell.

I'll get a picture and post it as a reply.

Thanks for all the advice and support.

I had to do the same thing-a local shop did the welding/touchup. It's not perfect, but the door works great, and really only I know what's there.

Not pretty, but it works!

Here's a quickie photo of the hinge repair. Looks awful, but the door works just fine. We'll see how it holds up.

This welding calls for experience. I recommend a pro unless you're a pretty decent welder.
