They are actually pretty nice! I have on in my '85, and I really like it. Fits nicely to the original contour and hasn't cracked, faded, or split in the 10 years I have owned the car!
I was actaully thinking of getting one for my '83 that I am trying to sell. -Nick

If done properly.... PITA!
Basically, when you order one, it comes with "a little extra" around the edges. In all actuallity there is about 1/8" - 1/4" lip all the way around that needs to be trimmed off before installing. If you take the time to trim it properly it really does look good. Once it is trimmed, you apply an adhesive on the entire underside of the cover allowing breathing space for the adhesive to dry. I.E. apply a "spiral" or parallel lines of adhesive, NOT a circle around the outside edge, or it will take forever for the glue on the center portion of the cover to dry. There are a couple of places that used to sell them, though I have not seen them for sale in a while. I actually used one from another company called "Spit Bits" for the restoration of my '69 Spitfire. It does require some creativity on applying even force to everywhere there is adhesive. I used pieces of styrofoam wedged between the cover and the windshield to push on the top surface. IMHO, they are one of the best options for recovering a dash, bested only by replacing with a new one $$! As soon as my wife gets home to watch the baby, I will run out to the garage to take some pictures of both the 944 and spitfire. -Nick

so its my understanding there must be some padding under the new cover, or you'd see the "glue channels"?
did you have to seal any cracks prior to the install? whats the correct way to 'trim'? is that done after the glue sets? you just wrap the edges and glue them down? sounds risky ![]()

The 944 and Spitfire dashes:
![]() ![]() The trimming is done before it is glued in place. It is a: hold up, compare, trim, hold up, compare, trim, repeat... over, and over!! You can fill the old cracks with silicone if you would like, but it is a hard plastic cover, so the old cracks don't show through. -Nick

Another nice option is available through a Rennlist guy, you send him your dash and he can recover it in leather (and a few other nice materials). Its not even that expensive. Seems like a great once and for all fix to a cracked dash.
If you poke around on eBay you can find some of his auctions. Pulling the dash out is not exactly something i ever want to do again however.

If you take the time to trim the cover, the edges blend in very well. The front edge along the windshield tucks in between the original dash and the windshield, so you can't even tell from outside the car that it is a replacement. Along the front edge, the cover cups along the natural "crease" of the dash. Even if you mis-trim the front of the cover slightly, you have to hang upside-down in the foot well it see any mistakes.
I will try to take some more detailed pics for the thread. -Nick

Here are some more detailed pics, the first couple show the front edge along the windshield, the third the drivers side, and the 4th the pass side.

Found one og these on ebay the other day. Emailed the guy because the one listed was for the 944. Different from my 924S. He said they aren't making anymore till April. To cold for the dies? I'll get something or wait.
Kyle, you got one. Would like to see it.

i've just got a dash cap, paul..
I pointed it out to ya last year... you didn't immediately catch on that it was a dash cap... the quality is satisfactory to the look, crappy to the touch... i think these ones would be of much better quality than the one i have.

Early 944 dash.
Is the Re-Dash plastic only or a plastic with vinyl covering? Is the quality better than some of the plastic dash caps? ![]() |

Nick,
when you installed the ReDash, did you have to take the cluster out or the vents to fold the ends and then reinstall them?

Kevin,
The cluster didn't have to come out. Originally, I tried removing the vents to tuck the cover along side (pass side), but there wasn't enough material to "fold in". So, in the long run, none of the vents have to come out either! -Nick
