Gasket Sealant

Im about to rebuild my engine and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on the use of a gasket sealant in certain areas such as around the ends of the oil pan and such and what product may work best.

Hey xupkid2...when I bought my gasket set it came with Loctite 574, so I used that on almost all the bottom end gaskets. Remember, this is my first Porsche engine rebuild as well, so I may not be the right one to look to for this. I have also used some RTV on gaskets like the water pump with grease on the back side so it doesn't stick to the block. Others will probably give us both some guidance.

Loctite 574 is used for the balance shaft housing cover to the block as well as sealing the oil pump back onto the block. Basically anything that there is no gasket for, you use the 574 (expensive stuff also).

You are supposed to use Silastic 730 on the corners of the oil pan gasket. Its expensive also, i think my friend paid $70 for a tube. I used it on the oil pan with his car and had no leaks. Others have used stuff called Yamabond (i think used to seal the crank case of Yamaha motorcycles together) and have had good luck.

The waterpump can be installed dry with the gasket or you can use a gasket prep (note i did not say sealant). I would personally not use any type of RTV on the waterpump. There is stuff called Hylomar which is a non hardening or drying gasket prep. Its tough to find locally though unless you have a specialty speed shop by you. Otherwise you will have to buy it online. Hylomar is resistant to oil, fuel, glycol...etc. Its great stuff and will not make it a PITA to get the old gasket off when its time to do it over again.

Just make sure you clean all the sealing surfaces as best as possible, this is probably more important that using a sealant or gasket prep.. with the exception of places where you need the 574.
