feeler: Tech video ideas??

Around the beginning of the year, I will be doing a ground up on an '85 944 for a friend of mine. Since I have this new digital cam-corder, I was thinking it would be an excellent time to put together a "video library" of common fixes on the early 944.

So my question to everyone out here:
What jobs should I make sure to cover in detail on video?

Starter ideas:
Timing belt replace
TB re-tension
alignment of balance shafts
sensor adjustment
clutch job

Let me hear em guys!

The idea is, when all is said and done, I am going to build a web page where all of the videos will be available for streaming or download. Along with the vids will be step by step info, and probably some (clearing of throat) scans from the shop manual... edited of course

Thanks for the help!
-Nick

Sensor adjustment?

Speed / reference sensor?

Sounds like an awesome idea

this is a sweet idea. hell, id just about pay money for it. CV joint R/R rebuild, Power steering rack R/R, rebuilt, Tranny R/R, water pump R/R, head/headgasket R/R...

maybe just do a video version of clarks garage? that would be a very long video!

Cutting down a clutch job to 10 minutes in length may mislead a few people... .

But a good idea, just would require lots of editing.

I'll admit, it could be worth a couple of pennies! But I think it would be ALOT more useful to people keeping it FREE.

Since I already loan out my 9201, I figure I will put an online submit form for anyone who wants to borrow specialty tools: tensioner, flywheel lock, oil cooler ring installer, etc. I figure a couple of bucks may come in that way as a 'rental fee' though it would be completely voulentary.

I originally thought about the "video version of Clarks" but want to make sure I get good video of common questions, and not just wide angle video of a complete overhaul!

I'm making a list of what everyone posts, so keep the ideas coming!

Thanks,
Nick

how to change struts/shocks, swaybars, bushings would be great for me. There was a guy selling a DVD similar to what you describe on Ebay.ca covering fluid changes, plugs, suspension etc. it was an hour long.

I'd be interested in all the above. might be an idea to do a lot of still images for certain jobs, instead of video. An hour or two video would take quite awhile to download and require a decent of amount of bandwidth if your site takes off. Alternatively you could burn a few DVDs and sell them, even for a few bucks, to cover shipping and blank dvds. I am very intrigued and could perhaps help with bandwidth or editing if needed.

nightheart,
Thanks for the offer! I will definitely keep you in mind as a resource. I had considered the time/bandwidth issue, and thought about breaking down each job into "chapters". Though,
you may be right about some jobs (using a series of photos). I guess that's the advantage of using digital video, it will make for much better still shots when it comes to frame captures!

I've thought about the same thing. I think it's a great idea...and the first one should be a "NO SPARK" video. Or maybe a "PLEASE DON'T ASK HOW TO TURBO AN NA" video..ok, just kidding on that one. But the idea and concept would be great. The only thing that made this hard in my mind is how you cover the early/late years...the turbos vs NA differences...the S vs. S2 vs. the other models and years. I only have one car and it would be hard to cover the other models unless someone with one of those cars steps up and shoots the video for their particular model. One thing is for sure...a picture is worth a thousand words and watching someone else do it before you do is worth a lot more.

Rather than taking all this on yourself, it might be good if you divided up some of the work to others so it could move along faster. So if you decide to do that, let me know which piece you would like me to do and where to send the completed video.

WOW, thanks razor! That's a great idea!!
And I like your idea on the "why not to turbo an NA!!"

As I said, I will be working on an early 944, but also have access to a friends S2, though I'm not sure what year his is.

If anyone would like to take on the late 944 and 951, that would be great! It would certainly save time!

Cheers,
-Nick

How to check sensors (MAF, idle, AFM, that sort of thing).

Installing a chip ('specially for the old one)

Great idea...keep me posted cause I'd like to do a T-Belt re-tension in the future. Don't forget to include a waterpump replacement. I used the Rennbay P/S pump rebuild clip when that was needed...could have done the job without it but it sure came in handy.
