951 Fuchs wheels-for sale? Replacement wheels questions

My '86 944 Turbo came with the 16" Fuchs wheels with new tires. While I appreciate the lightness of the wheels, I think somebody else could appreciate them more.

Anyways: what is a good asking price for the wheels with the tires? They're Yokohama dB1s (I think). New tires front and rear. There is a set that looks to be the same thing in similar condition on ebay for 2200 with bald tires. Am I in the ballpark with that figure? They are not in "new" condition, but there is no curb rash or anything. The paint is worn off around the edges that protrude the furthest from the center. I could paint them myself; I've done it before with other wheels and have had very good results.

I know the wheels are rare, and I'm not 100% sure I want to sell them. But I heard they're very valuble, and frankly, I'm not too crazy about the way they look on the car. I like some contrast between the wheels and the car (black wheels on a black car isn't me). But that's just a taste thing.

In looking at other wheels to get, I've found a couple that could be potential winners: the Boxster Cup wheels (17''?) Also, I know tirerack has a set of knock-offs called Sport Edition Cup 3 that they say will fit. However, I'm not entirely trusting of what a website says. What are the offsets that we need?

Are they 7" all around? If so, they are not really valuable or rare. Maybe $300-350 pr depending on the condition. 8" 944 Fuchs about $600pr. 8" 911 Fuchs are worth $1,000 pr. 9" 911 Fuchs new are $1650.

The listing on eBay at $2200 is optimistic to be polite (though his are 7s & 9s). I was selling a set of 911 Fuchs 7s & 8s, freshly refinished by Al Reed with brand new Toyos on them for $2200 and no one was interested.

I'll have to go out and look at the wheels themselves after the ice goes away. I'm pretty sure they're a staggered setup, with 8" wheels in the back. The tire sizes are 205 in the front, and 225 in the rear.

Either way, it sounds like they're not really worth getting rid of then, especially since they are very, very light and will perform well because of it.

have you thought about stripping them and polishing them? or painting them a different colour?

If anything I'd just leave them black and give them a nice paintjob. I'm quite proficient at painting car parts (valve covers, wheels, etc). I think I can do them justice.

If I wanted to keep things "original," is there a specific color of spray paint I should pick up? They're black, obviously.

i could be wrong, but i think my first pic is how they were originally.. not 100% sure though.

Backwards!

The 16 x 8 with the 951 part number is highly prized by the 911 gang, because it's the only way to get an 8" Fuchs wheel in the front. The 8" 911 wheel will rub the fender lips, while the deeper offset (and brake clearance) of the 944 wheel will fit without running silly amounts of negative camber, and rolling the fender lips completely flat.

The "ultimate" Fuchs setup for a 911 is the 951's rear 8 x 16 in front, with 9 x 16 rears. The 9 x 16s are usually rediculously priced (I have a set of 7 & 9 x 16 Fuchs for my 911), but as tire selection dwindles even for 16" wheels, we may see more people pushed to 17 and 18" wheels, and a corresponding drop in value for 16" wheels.

The 6 x 16 size is now becoming scarce, because this is the only size that Lindsey Racing will use to make their 17" 3-piece Fuchs. People are gobbling them up as quickly as they can find them.

Just put some 94 3.6 turbo speedlines on the rear. (10x18 with 265 35 18s) They look HOT and there is lots of room left. I'll put the fronts on today and see how that works.

Yeah, fat tires in the rear of a 944 look great, but it will understeer like a pig.

Depends on suspension setup. I prefer being able to put more power down out of a corner without rear slip.
