REALLY ROUGH idle
Okay so my vacume lines are now... fixed... the car actually starts, just... idles REALLY low... like... 300rpm or less and is quite rough.
If i try and give it some gas, it dies. I will be replacing the fuel filter tomorrow... Any other ideas? Recap: Car has spark, fuel plugs get wet (fuel is being injected), fuel pump flows (did not check for proper rate, just know that it flows), replaced all vacume lines, car was in storage for a little over one year, put something in the gas to treat it if it had any water in it, and... well thats about it really. oh, replaced the battery. Any more suggestions? Thanks guys!

Is the car misfiring or just idling low?
What does the spark look like when you pull a plug wire, strong? Any obvious signs of vacuum leaks? I have a feeling your running very rich, anyway you can check fuel pressure? Could be a failed regulator. The idle thing could be a mis adjusted idle screw, but the car should not die when you give it gas.

sparks look strong, no obvious signs of vacuum leaks (will check and check again to triple/quadruple verify), i think you might be on to something with running very rich but *shrugs*
Idle has never been adjusted, never needed to be. Any ideas of what a failed air flow meter does?

Not sure what a failed AFM will cause, but i know most of the time when things go wrong with it the car will start but die imediatley. Is the flapper door on the AFM stuck or anything?
Clarks-Garage has a good writeup on testing the AFM.

Isn't there a test procedure for the AFM on clarks? That's what my car did when I forgot to plug the AFM back in after a disassembly.
edit: here's the article. http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-22.htm

i know how this sounds, but... are the spark plug wires connected to the proper cylinders?

mine did too (unresponsive to throttle control). the vacuum was so large that it idled horribly and would die if given any throttle.

Well thanks for all the advice guys, the car was put in the shop this morning... i dont have enough time to dork around with it as the toyota corolla i have needs to be worked on... its gotta take me 1600 miles late march... from oklahoma to good ole california.
The guy who is buying the car is paying the shop costs, which of course will be deducted from the sale price... i hope it doesnt cost too much, if not... oh well. I did abuse that car a bit!!!

...umm...guys...
...if the car sat "for over a year" I'm 100% sure he has bad gas - no, not the kind Beano will fix, but you can't reconstitute flat gasoline no matter what additives you use. Drain the tank and refill it with fresh gas.

well to be honest, the car did run like crap before i put it in storage, i figured it was because the vacuume lines were disconnected and blocked off. it sat for a year... crap... might be bad gas... i dunno..
well, i dont care anymore. I do... but its just better if i didnt. car is in the shop so whatever

I recently saw a post regarding disassembling the OEM Air Flow Meter and cleaning the electrical contacts to help restore acceleration. I can't seem to find the post again, but it had pictures and all of how to do it.
Anyone familiar with this post? |
