updating 944s looks

I have recently been wanting to do something to update the look of my 86 porsche 944. The rear bumper is definatly begining to look dated...

I absolutely love the look of the 968 rear bumper and since the 944 is the predecessor of this model would it be possible to exchange bumpers, im sure there would need to be some minor body work done for it to look clean, but would the widths and bumper brackets line up??

Perhaps some one with some experiance working on 944s and 968s could help me with this?

thanks.

jordman. yeah lots of work would be required to mount a 968 bumper cover. Besides the mounts being different the rear quarter panels and rear lense mounting areas will need to be re-shaped and formed as you may know that a 968 bumper cover wraps around the quarter panels.

It's been done and i've seen a couple that have been converted but it was done by a body shop that knows what their doing and probably wont be cheap.

I myself think that it's outdated but for me i made mine to look like a cross of a euro bumper and whats on it know. The bumper and end caps are still in place but have a 3 piece rubber strip that extends from on bumper cap to the other with the 2 big bumper pads removed.

If interested let me know and i can email some pictures. I've
already received alot of compliments because of it's looks and it's alot cheaper than either.

To add that there really is no other option other than a 968 conversion and that will be very costly.

There are other options to hide/change the rear. See www.gt-racing.com

....or buy a 968 tub w/all the body pcs and swap the rest out of your 944.

nope slate, grey. There are actually a few 944's running around Barrie. Maybe we should try and track everyone down and have a little GTG.

Personally I think some "M3" style taillights would be awesome, I never did like amber lenses- just adds too many colors to the car and makes it look "busy." I'm not aware of any available however...

Are you sure it would need a lot of modification, im not sure about the bracket or how it is held on but body wise it looks like it would just pop right on, besides the wrapping around the sides, but that could just be cut out of the 944.

I can see the front bumper being a major pain in the ass to retrofit but the rear looks like the same dimentions... check the pics below.

Those side skirts on that silver 944 are molded in very very nicely. That those skirts, the fiberwerks bumper, and graft on a 968 rear end and you have a show winner car my friends..

just deleting the bumperette things helps a bit. Along with red tint turn signals.

I agree Schumi...Those were all blended in very well and it makes it look very sleek. I'm going to keep that in mind for when I get to the outside of mine. Looks very nice.

I understand it fits the 944 mounting pints. You wouls have to get the 968 lights .

That is a good look energy...GT racing (I think was who it was) also has some similar designs and I was thinking about some of those for my car but Techno Duck pointed out something pretty important to me. With those partsing being fiberglass and that close to the ground and on the front, they are going to rock chip and probably stress crack very easy, so you are going to have to repaint often.

What I did see on that site which might be of real interest to jordman is that they had a rear bumper for a 944 that looks like a 968 back end. I don't think I would mind fiberglass on the back as much as I do the front. Something you might want to look at jordman...the problem...it's in euros which means the price and shipping will be high. Might check GT racing to see if they have something similar.

You could just tint your rear taillight lenses for a subtle change.

I like the red tail lights Bertman (rims are kickass too) and its maybe a more economical way of doing it. Cleared out taillights would look good on silver as well. . . . I just cant get over the look of the 968, just blows the 44 away.

Nice site Energy, Maybe if it wasnt 350 euro plus shipping plus paint/ body work. Any one know of a place like this in Canada/ States? Or a Porsche wrecker on the West Coast with a few 968s layin in it?
