trans problem??????

I have a customer who bought a used trans from me , 1985.5 944 5sp. The trans ran fine before removal and I drove the car myself. He installed it and says that when he takes off 1st gear is "difficult" to launch from and that it winds out much longer usual and the rest of the gears seem fine. According to him 1 year old clutch and the old trans broke a gear while reversing. I have an opinion but would rather get advice from the board , any thoughts?

What year/model did it go into? Are you sure the trans you sent him was original to the 1985.5?

I believe it went into an 86 944 N\A, I'll double check. Im not 100% sure if it was the orig trans from the donor, why would it make a difference?

SoCal Driver 02-26-2007 07:36 AM

Gear ratio's.

earlr85944 02-26-2007 08:59 AM

for 1st gear? Yes, youre right I see there is a slight difference between the models but he says the 1st gear is winding out way long and difficult to take off in. It did come out of a running 85.5 and was working fine. He says the other gears shift fine and "run" fine.

Difference in 1st gear ratio should'nt make it difficult to take off. Sounds like something else.

It sounds like the linkage is loose and it's not shifting into 1st. The spring loaded central position for the shifter is in the 3rd-4th gear plane and from what you are describing, it is staying in 3rd instead of going into 1st.

Thanks for all the help, I agree with the linkage as the problem. Unfortunately the customer wants to remove the tranny and install a different one, it just doesnt make sense though: it was running fine before the car was parked.

Its possible that when he reinstalled the shift rod it wasnt seated fully where it bolts to the shift linkage on the trannny

earlr85944 02-26-2007 01:56 PM

yes of course, he installed it outside in subzero weather and it took over a week to install because of the conditions, better man than me, I wouldnt even have tried to replace a trans in that weather. (been there done that). With the linkage disconnected , how can he verify that the trans is in 1st gear, is the shaft all the way forward, back or somewhere in between?

trans problem?????

hello fellas,
i read the forum and i did adjust the linkage and tightened everything down to the best of my ability, and drove it.still is rough on first gear but i will try it again since i did'nt have someone with me so i could visually see if the gears were sitting properly, and i did bolt the linkage to the shift rod properly,it has an opening for the bolt, how could i install it improperly??anyway i will try again and let you know how it turns out,but any additional info wil be great.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1172540539.jpg

Define what you meen by difficult to launch? Does it feel like it is in a higher gear?

olivar 02-26-2007 05:10 PM

yes it feels like it is in high gear when it is in first.

olivar 02-26-2007 05:27 PM

i'm going to check out the linkage situation in the morning.

Cool, BTW- nice ride! I like the color!

The shift lever has a slotted plate where it mounts to the tunnel. You may need to adjust this plate. Also, the post on the shift lever tends to wear into an elliptical shape over time. You may need a new shift lever if this is the case.

would anyone have a parts breakdown i could look at?,the one's here in pelican parts are kind of vauge.i think you can e-mail me through this forum.

olivar 02-27-2007 07:10 AM

even a hand drawn picture will suffice.

earlr85944 02-28-2007 08:32 AM

here a pic at the trans which I believe needs adjustment.
according to the pic, when you shift into 1st, to the left and up the shift rod pulls the lever coming out of the left side of the trans forward and the welded tab on the shift rod pulls the other lever to the left side of the car. I believe the 2nd lever is not being pulled far enough to the left side and leaving the box in the 3rd, 4th plane. BTW- any luckhttp://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1172683892.jpg

i got it,it was the parts right underneath the arrow(don't know what you call it) but in my haste to get out of the freezing weather,i had installed it upside down,i inverted it today and tested the tranny, and i got to say it is running smoothly, thanks to all involved in helping.keep in mind to all attempting this in the future, that little detail will make all the difference. peace!
