Words of wisdom for chipping / upgrading DME.

Hey all, I just wanted to offer up some advice for anyone who has an "early" 944. I recently purchased Thoen's FR WILK dual adapter board and power prom, only to find that my "early 85" is a bastard child!

So, what do I mean?!?
Even though the DME has the early part number: 944.618.111.01
Internally, it has a later design main board. Yup, it already has a socketed prom, hence the adapter board will not work on this DME.

Thankfully, I have a local friend who recently purchased an '84 and has been looking into upgrading his DME, so at least I wont be stuck with it.

So, my advice: OPEN your DME BEFORE you purchase an adapter board! I have learned my lesson the hard way, I just wanted to make sure no one else made the same mistake. If you see this:

You do not need an adapter board.

And, to set the record straight, WR WILK is in business, and as helpful as ever. If anyone is interested in an adapter board for their early 944, drop him a line.

Hopefully this will help someone in the future!

Very true. The PO included a weltmeister chip with my car when I bought it. Every number matched, but when I opened the DME, the chip inside was the later style 28 pin chip...who knows how these things happen!

The same thing happened to me. When I went to install Wilk's chip in my old 1983 944, I found that it had a 1986 board.
