removing exhaust manifold studs - tips?
i am about to remove the cylinder head from my car. as i recall from my '83, these studs are a PITA. any tips/ideas/tricks to getting these out, or getting the header off a different way?
i've already torn it down to the point where the cam tower is the next thing to come off. its much easier the second time around...

I just used a pair of jam nuts on the studs to back them out of the head. Worked well for me.
(This was on the '83 that I just sold) Hope it helps! -Nick

Thread two nuts on, and spin the stud out with the first nut you put on. I did the same thing. My studs came out pretty easily, infact three of the studs came out with the original nut pretty much permanently corroded on.
Thats alot of nuts.

excellent. on my '83, i gave up after about three studs and undid the exhaust system brackets. then just pulled the manifold over and wire tied it out of the way. it sucked. i don't think i will be able to do that with the turbo exhaust.

I was able to move the exhaust manifold over the studs (a small prybar helps) and install same way. Much easier

thanks, john. that writeup is really good. the best i've seen, actually.
the very first problem listed describes something i noticed: at idle, the temp would get high, not really high, then immediately go down if i revved the engine. i haven't noticed any coolant in the oil. there is nothing on the dipstick at all. there is a little condensation inside the oil filler tube, however. also, i haven't seen any oil in the coolant. so i am hoping i am okay there.

The headers come out with the head.......... Then you can do whatever you want to them.
