cat is in warning light is on !!!!!

ok i just had the cat installed
after not haveing one for who knows how long and the dang check engine light is on now
any one ever have this problem the ! is on

has your idle dropped at all?
the added obstruction in your exhaust system may have caused your idle to drop a bit... causing the light to come on..

it's completely normal, as long as it goes off when the gas pedal is pressed. if you dont want it to come on, you can try "fixing" it by increasing the idle a wee bit.

67l60 03-04-2007 07:01 PM

light stays on at all rpms

but it does seem to idle differently

67l60 03-04-2007 07:04 PM

actually smoother and still idles at 900

Eldorado 03-04-2007 07:24 PM

then i'm not too sure.....

67l60 03-04-2007 07:32 PM

its not really brite like when switch is in on position but its on rather dim butt still on all fluids check out

Porsche-O-Phile 03-04-2007 09:52 PM

Since when does low idle trigger the light?

Low oil pressure, low voltage or a few other items that are BYPRODUCTS of extremely low idle might trigger the light, but low idle itself shouldn't.

My 951 idles like crap when cold (about 300-400 RPM regardless of what I do to fix it) and I don't get the "!" light.

944 Ecology 03-05-2007 02:26 AM

There is no check engine light, per se, on an 86 944.

There is a ! light, but that is to call attention to another warning light, like the brake warning light or the low fuel light.

Is there another light on besides the ! light?

When you turn on the ignition (before starting) do all the warning lights illuminate? If not, you may have a warning light that is burned out.

thanks for the replies

and to answre some more questions

all lites do lite up with the igniton , in on pos . and no others are
on while running except ! and its very dim

944 Ecology 03-05-2007 05:12 AM

Not supposed to work that way. The ! light only comes on when another light is on.

Sounds like you have an electrical problem in your gauge cluster.

67l60 03-05-2007 05:24 AM

well my dome light, does keep popping fuses .
so i guess thats not to far to jump . they the two electrical probleems seemed to start at about the same point, right after picking up from the muffler shop .
where as prior to being there i had none, butt they couldnt possibly mess up wireing while doing a cat
so logic has ruled them to not be at fault ,
butt rather its just being grumpy .about have its tail pipe corked.
and i have to yet again show it whos boss

id swear this car hates me

Is your emergency brake handle down all the way. If it's only one click up, then that light will come on.

67l60 03-05-2007 08:27 AM

thanks
i was looking at that the ebrake as it is needing new pads
so adjustment is way off i disconected the elec wire at the handle for its switch and its still on so i figured this couldnt be the problem , was i wrong ?
i dont have a brake light warning on

even though i will be doing brakes very shortly , and going thru the sys ,new fluid and all its pretty brown

mattdavis11 03-05-2007 04:14 PM

He meant on the handle. The wire you disconnected will not allow the E-brake light to go off if it unplugged.

67l60 03-05-2007 04:26 PM

i forgot to say i plugged it back in

thanks i was just checking it out
if that right it could still be the switch then

Razorback1980 03-05-2007 08:21 PM

The instrument cluster brake light will not come on because of the handle...only the middle warning light. It may not be the problem. I just did that one time and couldn't figure out why the warning light was on.

Eldorado 03-05-2007 08:41 PM

could a problem with the o2 sensor do that? like.. if it was disconnected?

just throwing that out there...

Porsche-O-Phile 03-06-2007 01:01 AM

No, disconnecting the O2 sensor or having a bad one will simply trip the DME into running in open loop mode. Euro cars have no O2 sensor.
