FS-Renegade 924 Project 80% done
 

Hey all,

Im selling my Porsche 924, which has a Renegade hybrids conversion installed. It has a Chevy 4.3 vortec engine in it. 250 hp and 260 lbs. of torque. It's a 77, with a pristine interior. it has 40,000 origional miles. Unfortunately, the block is cracked, and it cannot be run for very long. Also, it needs paint, and a hood cowl.

It also has a few addition things which are nice about it-
-It has the rear end lowered, like the ROW cars do
-It has 250lbs weltmeister springs for the front. (not installed)
-Has custom headers, which I am in the midst of wrapping with header wraps.
(I have the stock hood and the sunroof)

This is a great little car, but I'm not sure it's the car I want. I am going to continue working on it, but if someone expresses interest in it, I will probably sell it. I would also consider trading it for a ok/good condition 912 or 914, possibly another 924.

the 4.3 has a cracked block???? how did u connect it to the olf diff

adapter kit from renagade
they used to sell tons of porsche stuff
or should i say chevy stuff to fit into a porche

As far as I understand. The Renagade guys don't or at least don't sell any more the 924 Kits. The Frame could not take the extra power, Brakes were an issues, and Susupension well....

924S and 944 are the min.

What did you use for a Tranny Clutch, pressure plate and CV's?

Smog legal swap in IN?

Renegade doesnt make a 4.3 conversion anymore because the older 4.3's dont have a balance shaft.(they caused alot of bad vibration i guess) Obviously they weren't the best kits anyway, the previous owner had to do alot of work to get it working right themselves. This car does have a balance shaft. The engine is mated to the torque tube via corvette bellhousing, and a corvette clutch. The tranny is stock, I dont think it has upgraded cv's, but I could we wrong.
I have no clue if it's smog legal in Indiana, but does it really matter? Right now it has straight pipes, but I will get a muffler on it as soon as I sort out the engine problems.

A guy in Chicago has a turbo'ed 4.3 924, and he has had no trouble with his car holding up to the stress.
I did a compression test yesterday on it, and all cylinders are the same around 9 psi. I will change oil, and filters soon to see if that makes any difference.

Im glad you said that. I wasn't even sure any one in my family has ever had their car inspected..... I've only heard of smog tests in Cali and places like that.

If it's got a cracked block, it's more like 80% minus 50% done.

So I guess all you need to do is find a good motor, remove the bad one, install the good one and then do the 20% to get it on the road.

It's like one of those ads, "$50K invested, first $2K takes it."

I guess you could look at it that way. You have to take into account that an engine conversion isnt just 'dropping a new engine in' The previous owners had to weld new motor mounts, and do this and that, and lets not forget the brakes. It has a 911 brake master cylinder. It also has a hydraulic clutch, that isnt a very easy task. I will more than likely have a new block in it by the time anyone inquires about buying it anyway.

Oh, I also forgot that the crack was professionally welded shut, but there may be an internal crack. Right now Im testing to see what is causing it to overheat. I would guess the crack has something to do with it, but it's exhaust shows no signs of coolant getting burned, and I'm pretty sure it's not burning oil.

Wow, you Belt land folks still got some Freedoms with the Smog police. That's why Cali is the land of Fruits and Nuts, but its blows the crazy breeze across the greater states. Be warned.

Sounds like you have alot of work in to a car of love. But it's a little like marring a Wonderful woman with screwed up kids. Great.. but is it worth, the effort.

Many LT type Chevy blocks overheat in the little Porsche Frame. Small Radiator + no room to push out the heat. As far as I understand the problem, that's why everyone says get a LS type Engine on these swaps.


Wouldn't bet the Tranny and CV's would last too long.

You might as well finish your project before you sell it. Otherwise you fail and nobody wants a busted project for more than a fire sale.

Look… nobody will love you like your mother, and no-one will find value in the project if you can't show it. I actually think you came here hoping for inspiration. I hope you find it.

Well, I figured if more people knew about it, maybe there will be more of an interest if I get it running right. It is going to be a slick car when it's done. I'm sure the engine's overheating problem isn't because of the tight space it's in, it's definately a mechanical problem.
