Anything else I should replace while its apart?
 

Next weekend I'm gonna pull the cam housing and replace a leaking gasket and at the same time replace the belts/rollers/water pump. My question is, is there anything else that would be a good idea to replace while I have it in the garage and apart this far? Would like suggestions if there is anything so I can get the parts on the way and have them here for next weekend. Thanks in advance...

- Look for oil leaks at the crank and balance shaft seals- now's a perfect time to replace thoes if theyre bad. Aside from seals, check out your radiator hoses and auxillary belts... - thats all i can think of :)

Heater control valve, air oil separator o-rings, vacuum hoses and lines. Resealing the throttle body isnt a bad idea either.

I would go ahead and replace all of the cam tower gaskets. Much easier while it is off the car.

That is if you can get the cam gear off! That is truely one of those gaskets i would leave alone unless its leaking.

It is no small feat to get that triple square bolt out even with the cam tower on a bench.

In addition to the above excellent advice, you may want to buy new cam tower bolts (about $2 each Pelican). When you remove the old ones you may strip a head and wish you did. My vac "T" connectors were brittle and I had to clean up and get a couple. If you go all out, get new O-rings and hats for the injectors. The Bosch OEM may not be the kit for you. I bought aftermarket kits from a local VW shop for $4.00 each. Look at the band below the seal for a match. Clean the injectors with the Clarks Garage procedure, its real simple. Go WI=March Madness

Point take, but all you need is someone to stand on the cam tower while you turn the bolt out :) Be sure to wake it up first.

I take the approach that all seals will leak eventually, so I replace them when it's convenient. My $0.02.

The injector o-rings dry out over time and you get vacuum leaks. It's an easy replacement.
When I did my cam tower gasket I had two lifters that I could compress with my fingers, the others I couldn't. There is a proceedure for cleaning but I replaced the two.
Be careful removing the tower, the lifters want to fall out and roll around and you lose which one goes where. When reassembling use assembly grease, it holds the lifters in the tower almost long enuf to get it in place
