Motor replacement.
Alright, I've been saving since it(yellow '86) got hit and blew its motor, and I'm at the point I can start looking around for what I need.
I've got a few questions about things I have in mind to take care of when replacing the motor. First of all, if the motor is coming out, that would be a good time to replace the clutch. I don't know what is out there. I want to put in something I won't have to worry about it for a while. I'd also like a lighter fly wheel, as I prefer to rev match before engaging the next gear, and in a hurry, it can take a bit waiting for RPM to fall. Doesn't need to be an extremely light fly wheel, but I'd like to drop my shift times. I've been looking around for an S2 motor, but haven't found any idea on cost or availability yet. The extra power would be rather nice, but not necessary. I guess my first thing to do is figure out what all tools I need, and start reading up on the job. my experience with working on cars is solely with Remote Control race cars, which is easier as all the weights of the parts are fairly easily manageable, and I can set the car however I want to work on it. For reference, what happened the car, is the bolt holding the rod fatiqued, let loose, and a rod went through the block about 1/4 mile from the shop I was taking it to.

Sorry, did not mean to insult any other Porsche owners.
What I want is a Porsche that runs faster then a Vet, handles as good as anything out there and cost like Neon.

Perhaps in the future, a Factory Five kit car with a high revving 302 would be my V8 project. They don't make the nicest looking cars, but from the amount of owners thats show up for track events, its got to be a good car!

For a lightweight flywheel the only options you have are lightened stock or Fidanza. I would personally go with the Fidanza, i have heard stories of the lightened stock units warping. I believe Lindsay used to do them on a exchange basis but stopped because of this.
The Fidanza is about 6lbs, the stock is about 14-15lbs. They are not cheap though. As for clutch suggestions, i would just do a regular spring centered disc. Its leaps and bounds over the rubber centered and probably more than adequate for most cars unless its a hardcore track car. I would say forget about the S2 motor and go right for the 968 motor. Both are great engines with excellent low end power delivery, but the 968 engine with the variocam has awesome top end pull aswell. The S2 is around 208hp, the 968 motor puts out around 240hp. Price difference between the two is probably negligible. I would say either way you are spending more than $3500 for a engine.

FWIW I have a Fidanza flywheel in my Studebaker and it's quite nice. Makes that big lump of a Stude engine rev almost quickly. I have no experience using their products in a 944 however. It looks like the wear surface is somewhat easily replaceable too if you plan on keeping the car a long time.
good luck, nate

Nate, you are correct. Some of them have the friction plate riveted on, some have them screwed on. I obtained a Fidanza disc for the right price (free) with the plate rivited on, i emailed Fidanza about replacing it and they said it would be $90 plus shipping. Of course you can just buy the friction disc and do it yourself. I then found out what i had was a very old Turbo Fidanza flywheel...but its definetley on my list of things to be done when its clutch time for my car.
