Fuel filter question

I am new to the water cooled side, but picked up a nice low mileage 80' 924 turbo a few months ago. Having fuel delivery problem, evidently the accumulator is shot, its leaking, one coming for replacement, but my question is the fuel filter flow direction. Fuel filter located on driver side wheel well near wiper motor and the fuel filter on the car - seems to be installed backwards, to me -traced lines coming from beneath car - which I would assume are the supply/return - passes through fuel filter underneath front cowl to passenger side, down to the fuel distributor. The "flow arrow" on the existing filter points to the front of the car which would indicate toward the pump/tank. Any help would be appreciated.
