Mufflers
I know that the stock muffler on my 89 944 is a good muffler. But it does not give the best of sound. Has anyone changed to a muffler that gave a better, throatier sound. I want to find someone who has made the change and likes the sound. Because I don't want to end up with a sewing machine. Any suggestions to a good sounding muffler?

I have an ANSA arriving any day. Others on the forum say it has a good sound at a good price and maintains a stock look. Check out the recent post titled “Anyone tried ANSA.”

In all honesty, I've heard some aftermarket 944 setups and I'm not impressed.
When I upgraded my old 944 to the FRWilk chip set, believe it or not the car's sound improved tenfold. That old thing sounded just plain mean... I actually prefer the sound of my Wilked 944 to my 951 (except the whoosh of the turbo spooling, of course...). EDIT: I just watched the previously-posted YouTube link, and that 944 sounds very nice.

I have a Borla (plus) setup on my current Scirocco and could not be happier with the sound and performance. It is that of a low, fairly loud growl and not the tinny trumpet of some rice-burners out there. I’m trying ANSA on the 944 because of some favorable posts here, past experience on another Scirocco and the price point. The Borla set-up set-me back but has been a wonderful companion to the old MK1.

conkey, I installed a lot of ANSA setups when Fiats were still sold in the USA. For the money, I think you will be pleased with the sound. I think part of the issue is the inherent design of the 44 engine when trying to get a low tuned growl, good luck I hope it works out for you.

The muffler is about $160 depending which one you get. Having it installed on your stock exhaust pipe will probably not be more than $100.

I took my stock muffler off at the connector and made some modifications for improved flow and sound. Here is what I did.
Cutopen the top ofthe muffler cleanly cut out the insides welded in straight pipe welded the muffler back together and cleaned up the welds painted it matte black reinstalled. I love the sound and as long as you don't get on it too much ![]() Speedy ![]()

Okay, more favorable posts about ANSA! Thanks Tony. Cost is $260 shipped to the door and includes the entire cat-back system with stock looking tip and gasket. Unfortunately it is not a stainless system. I don’t think anyone could complain about Borla quality but they are quite proud of their merchandise. In any event I’ll soon be able to compare sounds of ANSA verses Borla albeit on slightly different German pieces. My daughter will probably wind up with the 944 in a few years while I move on to a 951 or 968 so I’ll have the chance to do all this again with a better feel for the perfect, frugal exhaust system.
What country host manufacture of ANSA? I like the post about gutting the muffler Speedy, interesting and inexpensive modification.

Thanks, I wanted straight flow without the looks of an aftermarket muffler.
Total cost was $60 for the extra exhaust system to modify and about 3 hours labor. Speedy ![]()

Conkey.....ANSA = Italian Design, hence the application on Fiats. Not it's not stainless but it is a lot of pipe for the coin as you already mentioned. On the Fiat, they sounded very nice, always had a nice Chrome out tip too.

Got it Tony and I'm in for Italian stuff...now I know. I'll post some pics of installation and let you guys know about the sound but give me some time, gearing for spring break with the kids at Perwinkle Park on Santabel Island next week.

Burn the fire.

Hmmm... good sound?
Remove the Catalytic converter, replace with a glass pack. Replace the muffler with a 'turbo' muffler. Should sound nice, and it won't sound like a rice rocket.
