holy waterpump gasket material....
i got the waterpump off with only a little bit of drama. the gasket material is REALLY stuck to the block. i foresee at least an hour with razor blades getting it all off...
anyway, just looking for some sympathy. cheers, d.

PB blaster softened it right up. i let it soak for an hour and it came right off with a razor blade. okay, it took three razor blades.

Use hylomar with the new gasket... never hardens, always seals.

Another technique I have had luck with recently is using aviation permatex (black, non hardening) and thinned out with brake cleaner. Apply the watery sealant to any paper gasket, which sucks the stuff up like a paper towel. The brake cleaner then evaporates, leaving behind the permatex to totally permeate the paper.
Works great!

my car runs better than it has in quite some time. tasks completed and items replaced:
new water pump new thermostat front main seal new timing/balance belts new rollers (they were definitely donesy; the 4 year replacement interval is spot on, IMO) new coolant new oil/filter new spark plugs cleaned and oiled air filter cleaning of miscellaneous parts i'll definitely try the hylomar or aviation permatex next go-round. thanks, fellow pelicans! d.

BTW, if you have never used spray on gasket remover, give it a try sometime. I find it works remarkably well.

i have used the spray on gasket material. it seems that autozone has one made with dibasic esters. that is not what i used, previously. the one i used seemed super corrosive and i couldn't breathe after applying it. i had to run the fan in the garage for an hour before i could get in there and clean off the gasket remover. i believe what i used before was CRC brand gasket remover.
