Hey everyone,
I have noticed a little bit of a dead spot around 2200-2500 RPM, feels like no power. I noticed it when I went to the store... the car was warm, I had been driving it about 5-10 minutes to get there and I shut it off, ran inside and the came back out. It was no more than 5 minutes. I notice it more when the engine has been warmed up, shut off, and then restarted a couple minutes later. I also notice it when the car is cold... like when I go to work in the morning. In warm temps I let it run only for a out 1 minute until I start driving, in winter I let it warm up longer. I wasn't too concerned about it but was wondering if this has happened or is happening to anyone else. The car has new plugs (iridium) new wires, new cap and rotor, new fuel filter, just changed the oil this weekend (10w40 castrol GTX), i run techron and Lucas fuel treatment every 3 months, all fluids are new. nothing is older than september of 2006. Timing belt is new, balance belt is new but it is probably off a tooth because of vibration and the car has new motor mounts. There is also a K&N drop in filter. New vacuum lines everywhere, and i checked for leaks dozens of times. Fuel pressure is prefect (as per napa auto parts testing), no leaks except for power steering. Other than these rare occasions said above, the car runs beautiful. Plenty of power through the RPM range. Any clues and/or suggestions? Thanks

happens to my '84 when the weather is cooler as well. the manual says NOT to 'let the car warm up', but to start and drive immediately, although obviously not full-out race driving. it says to drive in a more restrained way until it's warmed up, then you may unleash. i believe it's just a characteristic of the cold-start mode, until the car actually does warm up.
anyone else have anything else to offer?

sounds good to me. i know my car doesn't want to get going until the temp needle is at least above that first (bottom) hash mark.

My '87 944 does the same exact thing, usually as i pull away after backing out of my driveway. My '87 924S did it also. Ive tested and changed the AFM, no difference. Dont think its a anything to worry about.

From what you all have said I take it as this is normal. Just part of the pre-programing of cold starts and running of the DME?
And I was worried about bad Piston rings and low compression.... Maybe I should do a compression test anyway.... Thanks guys!

I have a feeling it is something with the cold start fuel map. I noticed if i am running my car in 'chipped' mode with the FRWilk fuel maps it does not happen.

Gains are less than 5hp. But the big difference is the power band. Smooths out the dips in the torque curve. Ive been using it for about two years, over 30k miles and no problems.
FRWilk hasnt been around lately.. though i think you can still order from his webpage. Do a search before you buy, about the previous happenings, you may want to tread lightly. http://www.frwilk.com/ Another option is to wait for the 944Max chip to come out, should be out within the next week or two. I am hoping to get a comparison of the FRWilk and 944Max chip when it becomes available. The FRWilk chip is defenetley the tried and true one to get..but i am looking forward to what the 944Max chip does based on his success with the S2 and S motors. Both are also nice because you can support multiple fuel maps, the FRWilk supports stock and modified maps, the 944Max i believe supports more than 5.

.012 Stock Chip .013 Performance chip/image Their were no other changes to the car, other than the chip. Don't be fooled by the numbers. Their have been changes compard to other runs. I can positively say that there is a very noticable change from stock to 944MAX.
*VERY* much so. It feels awesome. If I can get my hands on the wilk chip, maybe I'll go dyno with the three of them.
