I had been running Toyo Proxes T4-S.
They are cheap, and stick well.

225/45-17 up front and 255/40-17 in the rear, Yokos AVS-100 which stick pretty good but can go faster than a bottle of 'Glen' on a friday night., probably the treadwear....

Nynor, if your wheels are 15 x 7 I would go with 225, if 15 x 6 I would consider 205. 205s are already pretty wide on a 6 inch wheel, that is what I had on my 911 Fuch wheels. Tech specs for Toyo performance tires put a rim width of 6in as minimum for 225, you'd rather be close to maximum rim width for the tire, less slop as the sidewalls move during cornering. Contact patch size is a function of tire loading and inflation pressure, not necessarily tire size (bigger isn't always better - but it usually costs more).

I prefer the tighter wrapped 205's to 225's on the front. On the rear, I am going to work a lot more heat into those tires, and having more rubber to distribute the load can help if I'm pushing for a long time.

On an NA anything over 215 is too much tire for the car.

I race my 944. My class limits wheel width to 7", so we all run 225 Hoosiers. 225s on a 7" wheel are pinched a bit more than optimal, but still allows for better cornering forces, a worthy compromise.

A 944 is most fun to drive with equal sized tires front/rear. I have a set of 225/255 17s that are used just to get the car on and off the trailer. The car looks great with the wide 255s in the rear, but it understeers like a pig.

The later cars came from the factory with 205/225 and 225/245 setups to induce understeer. That's considered safer for the average (poor) driver. All the serious 944 autocrossers around here use 225/225 on the NAs, and 245/245 on the S2 and turbos.

Equal tires allow the tail to beautifully drift in complete control.

Dantilla, you are talking 225 on 17 x 7. Wouldn't you argue that 225 is a bit wide for 15 x 6? When people run 245 front/rear are they using 8" rims on the front? I am taking my car to the track Friday with 225/245 16s on 7"/8" rims - I still qualify as a poor driver but hope to be over that by Monday. You're making me think I should get some 16 x 8 for the front and run 245/245.

225/245 on 7&8" will be fine.

Learn to drive the car. Any car. What you learn on the track will make you a better driver no matter what you drive.

225/245 is a factory setup. Can't complain about 944 handling at factory specs!

We have a very competitive autocross program, with several drivers with national titles. Every little bit makes a big difference. But what you've got will work just great. When you need an additional .002 seconds over your competition, then we can look at fine-tuning the details.

Have fun.

And you're correct, a 225 tire will not work properly on a 6" rim.

What would be a good tire if I want to stay at the stock 215/60-15 size? I have been looking at the Bridgestone Pole Position ultra-high performance all-season tires... I have a set of good snow tires, so I just need summer tires, but these seamed to be the better compared to the Dunlop or Pirelli tires still for road use in the dry and wet... Any suggestions?
