Injector ballast resistors. What are they??

Ive been having trouble with my 944S, dies then wont start etc etc. Looked at everything and testing all possibilities, no answers. Then I turned the key on and smelled a buring smell coming from the ballast resistors. On the wire going in we had zip - tied somthing, giving just a little tug on the connection. Of couse we cut the zip and inspected the plug connection for the IBR and it was totally fine and firmly connected. But then the car started with no problems and continues to start. To confirm this could be my answer I unpluged the IBR --thinking it would not start and this would indeed conclude the problem, be she started !!!Damn. So my question is, if you are a wiring/electrical person reading this, could a tugging on a connection somehow ground or short it out??? And what does the IBR actually do and shouldnt the car die if this is unplugged.

Please only answer if you know what your talking about or have had similar problems, need to get this fixed. Thanks
