First oil leak in the new car?

A few days ago while I was driving I noticed a faint burning oil smell. Fast forward to today. After my car warms up, I notice the smell again. I open the hood to see if there's anything I can spot, and there is a little bit of smoke coming from down by the exhaust manifolds.

It seems that oil is leaking from somewhere and dripping on the manifolds and then burning off, but I haven't had time to put the car on jackstands yet - and there is no oil spot underneath the car when it is parked. Moreover, after I drive the car for awhile the oil smell seems to go away, almost as if the oil has burned off.

I checked the oil level, and it was only slightly lower than normal, and this car DOES burn a tiny bit of oil (a quart every month to two months).

Just wondering if this is a common 951 leak, what I should look for, etc.

I sound like a broken record, but...cam gasket? There are two - cam tower gasket and the back of the cam tower. Know how long it's been since it's been replaced?

The car's service records show "#1-2 Rear of cam box - #2 pan gasket leak" was repaired in 2002, at 64K miles (100K on car now). How quickly do these go?

Apparently, this gasket is a common cause of the leak you describe. I paid a dollar and change for it - from the Porsche dealer.

Is this a repair I should tackle myself? How much would labor be at a shop?

haha. Okay, well I know I CAN do the repair, but keep in mind that the 951 is my only mode of transportation for the time being. In other words, I can't afford to have it off the road more than a day or two, and I have to get to and from work every day.... so I can't afford to screw anything up....

I don't think it's that hard; can be done without taking the cam tower off.

Oh cool. Can anyone point me the *best* step-by-step on this? Clark's Garage doesn't seem to have it. I'm sure the factory manuals have it, but the factory manuals leave out a lot of details that DIYers might need.

The bottom screw is the tough one. It can be time consuming because it's hard to reach and there is very limited space for tool movement to tighten it. Make sure you have the lock washers for the screws too. There are three screws, two on top and one on bottom. A mirror works well to see the bottom hole. Make sure you get the hole with the threads on the bottom.

And, just while we're throwing complications on there, be sure you torque everything to the correct amount or it'll leak again.

Does anyone know the correct torque for these screws? I have been looking long and hard for them and I can't find anything,

It's on clark's. in INCH-POUNDS. Get a 1/4 drive torque wrench. it's something like 6 Ft-lbs, or 72 in-lbs.

I will likely do this myself, but if I do bring it to the mechanic, how much would I likely pay in labor?

Do you happen to have the link to Clark's? I can't seem to find it on there. And I thought I read the whole site.

Thanks. I went through the whole manual there again and found it. I ordered two gastkets, one for the "next time." I am new to doing this type of engine work. What is a normal procedure for installing a cork gasket? I have heard of people putting oil on them so "they don't dry out," and I have heard of people using RVT so they will not leak. I prefer not to use RVT, but I am wondering about using oil on the gasket prior to instalation. Maybe it's all a matter of preference. The other cam gasket clearly states to make sure both surfaces are free of sctraches, are clean, and are dry, or the gasket will leak. The cork is obviously a different type of material.

Do not oil a cork gasket! It will leave a molecular path for the oil to seep out through.
