Oil Gauge question

I have been looking over the threads. I have one difference to most. I have just replaced the oil pressure sender. As soon as I turn on the key the gauge jumps to peg 5. The Idiot light comes on and as soon as I start the car the Idiot light goes away but the gauge is still 5+. The old unit would have the gauge either peg 5+ or 0 or even sometimes kinda work. The Idiot light would flash when idle after engine good and hot. Hence why I would like the gauge to work. The old sender looks like the original 85.5 unit. I don't trust the idiot light but no working gauge. Could it be possible I got a new broken sender? Could the wire be possibly bad? How can I check the wire? I find it weird that the gauge is 5+ as soon as the key is turned on. Any help would be greatly appreciated with this.

Try swapping the wires on the sending unit around - you're grounding. HTH

I did try that already. I was hoping that was the issue but it was not.

You have an open circuit to the Pressure gauge. If you disconnect the wires sensor it would do the same thing. Low Oil light comes from sensor in lower Oil pan. Check connections at sender, then maybe check the 2X7 connector by the brake boost. Then Check the guage connection for switched on power and gnd. I noticed this on mine when my engine was outta the car and I turned on to postion 1. Clarks Garage has a good write up on testing Sensor with Variable resistors. I'd Swap guages before Senders. Good luck

I checked the sensor and the resistance is working with pressure so it has to be a wire. I checked the connector by the brake boost so it has to be behind the dash. I am having to replace the odometer gear as soon as it comes in so that would be a great time to look at that. Thank you for all your help.
