auto trans help...pleeeeeeeeeez

ok, I picked up a 86 944 auto trans, the previous owner said he had problems with slipping up hills etc. When I go through the gears there is no noise of any kind.

Ok im no expert but wouldnt the torque tube spin? Is there anything I can do to diagnose the problem.

Anything to point me in the right direction would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

When was the last time you changed your timing and balance belts and/or cam chain and tensioner?

ROTFLMAO!!

::edit:: wow didn't read your response....

Sometimes you can get lucky by replacing the transmission filter, but more often than not it needs to be taken to a tranny shop to be serviced.

Yeah, that was pretty funny. To answer your question although I don't understand the reason for it. Yes, the torque tube will still spin....it's just the tires that will not.

Ok ok ok I can take a hint, take it in. The previous owner said he did the fluid and filter. I was just trying to see if it might be the torque tube since my 928 had stripped splines but a good trans.Im going to just look for a used one and do a swap.

The 944 does have a rubber damper just behind the motor that does give out sometimes. Usually when it slips, you feel a clunk (so I'm told but I've never personally felt it) and you will see rubber chunks under the car just behind the motor. If you want help finding a transmission, let me know.

There are adjustments for the kickdown cable that wildly effect transmission performance. consult the factory manual.

Well after getting it up on stands and checking to see what happens when its shifted, the damper and torque tube must be fine as I can see it rotating through the inspection hole, the shift cable is moving,I was told to check the fluid pump? When I shifted it the fluid in the resevoir dropped half an inch or so,Im assuming that means its pumpn, transaxle has fluid.Guess its pull time.
This is all new to me and I realize most of you do this in your sleep...so bear with the stupid questions or Im gonna go buy a Taurus lol....Happy Easter peoples !!!!!!!!!!!

Seriously, at least try playing with the adjustmenst at your throttle body. the cable thing. I had mine anywhere from "won't shift out of second" to "Where the $#^%!#$^ did reverse go?".

well, to make a long story long. I determined the differential was bad, I bought a used trans and removed the old one, the car is at my place in Washington where I cant do major repairs and got caught lol.
Anyway I would have had to tow it, quoted $500 ish for replacement, pay duty to bring it into Canada and before I could register it I would have had to replace the windshield.
Im parting it now, kinda bummed because its in such good shape,it ran good but I bought it inop and never really knew the rest about the car as far as how it drove, belts etc.
I let it run for a hour straight and it seemed fine as far as temp, starting and restarting, clean anti freeze.
Im just gonna hangout and wait for a nice one to come along.

Need parts? lol
